These are two comps of a logo for a rural, historic town whose primary draw is verbal story telling. They have a story telling center and a huge annual story telling festival, which draws thousands.

I took everyone's advice last week and combined the wood cut look, with the idea of something "magical," as well as played with the rocking chair idea that Mara gave me.

I like the image of the rocking chair. I also like the idea of the tree with magical swirls. Only right now I kind of see a hand with long nails, sort of like a witch's hand. I think if you tweaked the inside branches a bit it would look more tree-like. I think the blue and green outlines could be a bit softer (it's sort of hard to tell, I can't get the image to open larger). I do prefer the blue color on top, it creates a softer feel. The asymmetry of the background works well. Nice typeface for Jonesborough. I do think however "hear the magic" typeface is a bit too sterile. Great start.

yeah.. i see now that the tree form is a little harsh. I will tweak those. Does the top comp say "magic " to you?

I don't know if it's just me, but I can't open the attachments. I get an error message.

I'm not sure if it's because I'm still seeing the hand or it's the curly shapes, but I think it has a Tim Burton-esque quality about it. Not sure if that's good or bad. But it definitely has an essence of whimsy and magic.

Looks more like a road going through some thorny bushes. I like the first one, and yes, Like Ollie says, definitely Tim Burton. Reminds me of ghost stories by the camp fire.

That is on target... but I don't want it to look creepy. These stories from this town are soooo diverse. Any subject, by many different kinds of people. I don't want to pigeon hole.

I have to say these are pretty good; you took the feedback to heart on the first post about this. :)

I'd have to say the pastel colors aren't saying mystical or magical to me, more fun and frolicky...maybe some more intense colors would work. I'd say purple but that color is despised by printers because it's so hard to reproduce. :) Maybe something a bit more moody.

I like the rocking chair best. I want to see more details in the icon, though but with the same shape. Can you put the state abbrev. after the Jonesborough title? Might make the logo more universal.

Can 'Hear the Magic' be a more handwritten or scripty font?

Shanda, keep working on this -- I like it!

Behind the rocking chair. Like the chair is taking you on a magical journey. Kind of like grandpa's stories.

Thank's Natobasso! I think you are right about the colors, they are are not very energetic or imaginative.

One thing I am struggling with is that I don't want this town to look boring. Right now, the main audience are older people, but my company wants to attract younger visitors (which I am skeptical about that happening.) But reguardless, do you think that the rocking chair can still be a draw for a younger audience?

Mintsauce- I like the idea of trailing stars, I will have to try.

Well, tell your client they have to pick a market and stick to it! :) As long as you kick butt on the logo (and I have no doubt of this) it will be so intriguing that younger people will be interested. If you try to 'cater' to younger and older folks at the same time you will alienate both, guaranteed.

The kids can smell when they are being targeted and don't think it's cool. :) Have you heard of the resurgence of knitting on the part of 24-40 year olds? This trend speaks to a larger trend of folks 'getting off the grid' in their lives and this town, your logo, and the message fit in with this trend, methinks.

Stick to your guns and give your clients evidence to back up this assertion. You are their designer and their guide to a better presentation. Use that power.

That was a great way to put it. natobasso--- i emailed you some stuff I didn't want to post on here. They are logo comps for this project that my boss had another illustrator do before I took a crack at it.
