Stupid question about high res icons/avatars
onegirlcreative (1090 pencils) | Thu, 2007-05-17 02:02How on earth do you guys get your avatars/icons to be such high-res? Especially when the limitations are only 30 KB and 40x40 pixels? I'm confused.
Mine looks blurry and like crap. But others, like Ivan, looks crisp & clear.
Talk to me, designers—what gives???
Grazie!

first off, what are you using to make the avatar?
second, if you are using photoshop, how are you saving the file?
i'd recommend using save for web, which uses optimization to give the file good quality with a small file size.
from the looks of it, you are just saving as a jpg with really low quality to keep the file size down.

I guess I never knew about the save for web optimization. Good idea! Thank you so much for recommending that. I will try that.
P.S. Yes, I am using Photoshop.

It's a little bigger but it's not lossy so the quality will be better.

Good thing you mentioned that because when I did exactly that and saved as a jpg, it still looked crappy. I will now try the PNG format.
Thanks, Kev!
