Tear Sheet? WHAT?!?!?!
aitchmal0ne (220 pencils) | Mon, 2011-05-09 15:45I work for a magazine and a client is now asking for a "tear sheet" before they will pay us. This is the first time anyone has ever requested this of me -- so naturally I am asking all of you for clarification. What in the heck is a "tear sheet" and why is this term new to me. Am I a complete ditz?!?!?!

It's a proof-of-publication. Just send them a PDF scan, or a fax, or a cut-out of the printed ad. That's it!
The term is very accurate - you tear the page out of the publication and send it to the advertiser to prove their ad ran as promised... "tear sheet". It used to be SOP for pubs to send a tear sheet with the ad invoice. And while Matt is correct that many places these days accept PDFs, scans, whatever... those do not qualify as "proof" since they don't prove the ad was ever printed. You might get some flak from an agency for that along with a request for a real tear sheet if you want to get paid.
