Text around a Spiral 3D Path

I needed help in trying to get this idea of trailing a text around a 3D path like in the image [link below]. Is it an illusion which you can create in Photoshop or Illustrator or it's done in a 3D software?
Please help!

I had to do that for an orange peel a few weeks ago. I used photoshop to add shadows and such for when the curves 'curve' around each other, but you could do the ENTIRE thing in illustrator by placing 'blocks' of your copy into and envelope 'mesh' and manually twisting it until it matches the path. Its hard to describe really, but the Envelope tool in Illustrator and the Warp tool in Photoshop is your best bet.
I used to be a filter mad user, especially in Photoshop, as well as using those wonderful KPT filters in Illustrator (they had a GREAT warp tool and 3D tool!) but that was way back in 8! Nowadays I hardly ever use 3rd party filters. . . 1 because my company is anal with spending money on such things and two, I really think you could achieve MOST things with the existing tools you have.

Hmm.. Interesting as it sounds I will have to try it. Do you have your Orange Peel online somewhere I can take a look at?

It can absolutely be done in Illustrator.
One of the regulars on the Adobe Illustrator forum has created a bunch of tutorial PDFs. A couple that dealt with spirals included some techniques to make text-on-a-helix.
I tried to find the threads on the AI forum where he posted links to the PDFs, but no luck. And the guy won't build a page on his site to house all of the PDF tutorials he's made, for some reason.
