Zilpher7 (45 pencils) | Sat, 2007-07-14 10:01What do you do when a clients gives you a name that does not go with anything. If its a name that he just made up and sounds nice but he wants to stick with it.

Is this the name for their company?
Why doesn't it go with anything?
If it sounds nice surely that's a good point, no?
Elaborate please.

Part of being a designer is being part artist, designer, and educator. If the client isn't totally sold on a name, it's up to you to give him alternatives with explanations why they are more appropriate (with valid reasons).
If the client is not going to budge on the name, well that's where being a designer is more important than being an educator; it's your job to come up with a solution that is appropriate. Logos don't always have to be representative, I prefer using abstract logos for clients that really don't have a direction because they're so flexible that you can create a symbol or mark that still represents the company without it being "see and say".
note: An example of "see and say" is when the logo is obvious, ie. a pencil company with a pencil as their logo.
A friend of mine who I work with (we do packaging design) straight up told a client (in an email) that she didn't think his company name was appropriate and gave him some suggestions. He picked one and that was that.
Granted, this was a customer she has a very good rapport with.
that all clients were this easy...
with that said, if the client is sold on the name, then you might just be limited to the name. As much as i preach that the relationship i try to build with a client is a long term one, there are the odd occasions where i get commissioned for a job that i think to myself "this is going NOWHERE" so, i do the design the best i can, with a smile, i cash in, and call it a day.
be happy the name sounds nice.
I'd be curious of the name of the business and what industry it's for.
