The Tiger is coming!
Craig (235 pencils) | Wed, 2005-03-16 11:06I feel like a kid at Christmas just reading this...
From MacMinute:
Apple is set to launch Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger by mid-April, according to eWeek. The next major version of Apple's powerful operating system will introduce several innovative features. "Sources told eWeek that Apple plans to make copies of Tiger available in its own retail stores as well as through independent dealers by April 15, with the official announcement of the product coming earlier in the month."

Any suggestions what I could list in my "Reasons to Upgrade to Tiger" which I'll be giving to my employer? You know, they like to have justification to spend $$$ on upgrades.
And so you know what we do...I'm an art director, and we work with print and video production. Programs used in a typical day include: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat, Final Cut Pro, Quicktime, and DVD Studio Pro.

That's what I love about my work. They love getting new software, so we're always up to date with stuff, mainly because our clients upgrade quickly too, so we have to support them. We normally have the newest software and OS upgrades right after they come out.

Well first of all, just because MacMinute posted the news - which they got from eWeek, who got it from MacRumors, who got it from AppleInsider, who got it from ThinkSecret, who got it from (most likely) a beer and some spare time and a reasonable amount of assumption doesn't mean it's actually going to happen.
Even if it is *announced* in April, it's possible, or even likely, that Apple won't ship til May or even June. Though they could just as easily ship in April.
Having used a recent beta, I can tell you that there's a lot of touch-up work to be done yet, though they may already have it done and just not bothering to put it in the betas they send out because it's mostly cosmetic.
Just don't hold your breath, that way you're not disappointed... or purple!

So what exactly do you mean by saying it?
P.S. It is not possible under any sircumstances that announced in april (I mean announced - claimed to be completed) software will first start shipping in june. This is just not how big companies make business.

What I mean is that you can announce something any time you want, but actually delivering it is a different story. Griffin has a habit of "announcing" a product, and even taking pre-orders, and then not actually shipping until a year later. Apple announced Tiger last year.... and it hasn't shipped yet. In April, we will get another "announcement" that it is finished. But it's POSSIBLE they may say "it will ship in May" you just never know anymore.
That IS how big companies make money, and they do this intentionally. It builds anticipation, and boosts the stock price up for the time between announcement and actual shipment.

Well, regardless, I hope it does end up being in April. :)

Yes, that would be MOST WELCOME!
I'm particularly looking forward to Automator, Dashboard and the File Syncing built-in.
The one thing that may upset a LOT of people will be *possible* issues with many (read: most every) menu bar application.

I guess the difference is how we understand the word "announce". What the news suggest is that Apple will release the software and start selling money for it.
At the same time I see no reason for Apple to announce it once again - don't think they have much to add to what they've already shown.
And again, once Apple puts the button "Buy now" on their web page for the new version, it won't take 2 months to delivery it.
P.S. Griffin is not a big company :-)

I can't see Tiger being released before WWDC, nor do I think it would be a good idea to do so. Apple usually relies on the hype generated from their Moscone events to help fuel sales.
It's all just 1's and 0's
on the other hand there are so many things announced at that time, that they might actually release it shortly before or after to get space in the columns.

Oh, I'm chomping at the bit like many of you, so believe me when I say -- I hope I am wrong. I just can't logically see what we'd theoretically see introduced there otherwise. It's all but confirmed that there won't be speed bumps on the G5, though if there were, that would most likely be the place to do it. There's quite possibly the Quad G5, but from a developer standpoint, many have failed to even take advantage of the dual processing.
There was recently a revision to the Powerbook line, so I can't see G5 Powerbooks, nor new iMacs. What I can see possibly though is an entirely new Apple venture. Perhaps this will be the fabled TiVo style set top or perhaps a totally new facet to Cupertino.
My best guess, and what I would do (not that anyone cares) ... Make Tiger available after the Keynote, much say the Shuffle was at MWSF. Then Steve and crew could pump the features of the latest OS before the world's media.
It's all just 1's and 0's
I figure it can't be too long before the release 10.4, for no reason other than the fact that Panther is up to 10.9. They've only got one number higher to go before they run out of updates. :)
Sorry to be picky, Joshua, but to be correct, Panther is up to 10.3.9. But I knew what you meant, and I'm sure everyone else did, too. :)
why? can't they just have 10.3.34?
Saw this on a forum, Could it be launch of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger?
