hmmm first thought I like

hmmm first thought I like the look then the second thought keeps slapping me in the face it is for a church. To me it seems a little too playful for a church great for wine vendors thou. like I said I like the first look of it but just not thrilled with the message I am getting from it. It makes me want to stop and get some wine not og to church. This is just me what do others think.

tighten up those letters

I think the letters need to be kerned alot more closely together.

Is this a free font? Because that Y looks pretty awful. I think you be better off using Futura or Avenir for this.

archmedia's picture

agreed

the "y", the "c" and the "e"

i feel like i'm about to bust out and sing "YMCA"

with the jokes out of the way now, the kerning is a bit of an issue, and yes i think you could find a much stronger font in the same style. even go for a cheap alternative like Century Gothic.

I know purple is a very religious/"rich" color, but i think you could find a different color. you have a really good concept going, i overall like it, it's just on further looking it at it just needs some tweaking.

keep us posted.

With a name like "The Vine"

With a name like "The Vine" you could create something very natural and organic suggesting roots & growth. This feels slick and shiny. I think your first attempt was closer to a successful design. Maybe just brainstorm a bunch of quick ideas and see what you come up with that is most fitting and work from there.

Design Brief ?

I'm just finding it hard because the client want's something modern web 2.0ish that is the style they are going for.

Oh boy. Modern, web 2.0 ish.

Oh boy. Modern, web 2.0 ish. That usually means 'unusable except on the web'.

So why no cross anywhere in the logo? Without the text I wouldn't know this is a church logo. Otherwise pretty good composition.

i'll try to play devil's advocate for a second here..

web2.ooohhh is something i dislike, but as my subject states, i'll try to play devil's advocate and defend the other side. (yes, wish me luck)

Web2.0 logo's do infact have a sort of "feel" that obviously lends itself to being only for screen, hence why it's called web and not print2.0. However, given the printers we have nowadays, we can get away with alot more then we used to in the past. The biggest drawback is the obvious two, photocopiers and fax machines. The latter of those is a dying breed also thanks to email, but the photocopier lives on and strong. There's alot of "rules of thumb" about graphic design that have changed when it comes to branding/corporate identity. Infact, so much so that it gets mentioned in this 2007 Logo Trends article. Keep in mind, it's also stated that "designers continue to play havoc with the remnants of the rules set forth years ago for logo design."

now. I personally try avoiding the whole gradient thing, i'm no fan of the reflected look, but i do know there are a time and a place for each. The reflective look works if the company has no intention of printing stuff and strictly being online. The gradient, they "can" be well used if careful, but i've seen far more cases of it being foolishly used then effectivly used.

Back to the logo; i'd be really careful on doing the whole "web2.0" thing. Please, please, please, don't make it into a reflective styled logo for a church. it's a design style that will sooner then later run it's course (man i hope it dies REALLY soon) and it'll just be way off target for this type of client. Just fall back on the old tried tested and true rule of KISS Keep It Simple, Stupid! there's a reason everyone talks about this rule, cause it works.

Best of luck on this one, trying to get a style they claim to want, yet keeping in mind it's just a fad of the moment and that in the end, it's just not the right target audience.

Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for the feedback, I just used the reflection for display on creative bits.org it's not actually part of the logo.

Thanks,

o_O

Church and web 2.0 shouldn't be used in the same sentence.

pointy

Everyone else already mentioned most of my beefs with the type... but my remaining concern is the value difference between the purple and the gray is not enough. When you reduce the logo to say a 100 pixels or so, it gets all muddied together.

More than that is the point of the leaf... or rather the point of the purple field around the point of the leaf. It just looks too "Illustrator's automatic offset path", and not as organic as a leaf (or vine) ought to be.

I will say that I really like the purple and green. Green for growth and purple for the royalty of Christ the King (which BTW is the Vine, and we, the church -- the bride of Christ, are the branches, not the Vine... :D )

Getting there

As someone who is heavily churched, and sick and tired of all the dove-y, crossy, open bibly stuff out there...glad to see something different.

I concur.

At first glance, I smiled. I love the graphic, and the original colors. It breaks the church cliche logo and is catchy and positive looking. That said, I think the typography needs work. You made some good progress with the updated version, but I'd like to see it back to the original colors and either finding a better font for "the vine" or tweaking the letters to make it balance better.
