The Visionary
Mitch (134 pencils) | Mon, 2006-02-13 13:23Hi All.
Just wanted a crit on this newletter for the International Guide Dog Federation. My main aim was to keep the layouts clean/approachable/friendly (the articles supplied were sparse so that has given me the opportunity to open up the layouts a little more than normal).
It will be sent to the various affiliated offices around the world so the demographics are the office staff which is somewhat vague.
Most of the images are supplied by IGDF, so I had no chioce but to use them. I am still in the process of working on the details, (shadow of puppy, kerning, titles etc)
p.s. I haven't forgot about the other crit I have in process, just been forced onto this one as it is a rush, rush, rush! Will show some progress on the other thread ASAP.

It's very well done. So clean it almost looks like a product brochure for a new drug or something.
A few things, most visible on the page with "Guide Dogs Victoria Leads The Way": A little too much leading in the headline, doesn't match what you have on the other pages. I guess you're working on those details though.
Also, your sub head, or is that your first paragraph... the text is bigger but not nearly enough bigger. If it's a subhead, more size contrast! If that's a paragraph (since it's awfully big for a subhead) consider something else, like Small Caps or an Initial Cap in the first line, but not the whole paragraph. Same with the smaller paragraph at the bottom of the page, not enough size contrast. Maybe it looks better full size. I don't know what the text says so I can't say for sure what should be done, if it's part of the article then it should be the same as the rest of the text.
Many thanks Apfhex, I was a little concerned with it looking on the sterile side of clean, I was thinking of maybe using the coloured bars on the cover to break up the info and lighten it up with the colour from these. Maybe using it for the origin of article tab, or maybe some sort of header support.
Yes all kerning, leading and finetuning is yet to come. There are some good points there for me to digest.
Much appreciate your time and effort in having a look.
If anyone else fancies commenting, no matter how pos/neg, it is all good and very much appreciated.
So why does the dog on the cover and other pages have testicles under his nose? Sorry, I am not a pervert, but that's all I see now.
Thanks for the laugh, otherwise, great work.
I can't believe I didn't see that. It made me chuckle too.
Nice one Wurx.
If anyone else wants to comment, pos or neg, it is all good!
