The Visionary - Ammended

Mitch's picture

Hi, had a crit>> http://creativebits.org/the_visionary sometime ago and finally it is going off for another proofing.

On page 10 (the one opposite the magnifying glass) the gradients in Illy have rasterized a little strange in PS, well it has been replaced with the flat colour, can't be arsed at the mo to sort it as I am under the kosh here today.

Will replace that image when I have some more time...

Dog

Once again, all I see is a dog with giant testicles under his chin. Sorry. (and yes, I'm still laughing...Thanks)

Don't repeat images. The dog

Don't repeat images. The dog looks sick. Other than that I think it looks good. Good use of white space.

Cheers Wurx, again another 'great' post.

Hi Ivan, again it's a budget

Hi Ivan, again it's a budget job, most images are supplied, and they have requested that this shot is used for the cover (don't have any alternative angles/crops etc).

Guess it is a case of do the best with what you have...

Critique

Ok, all joking aside. I do agree with Ivan, but if you have no choice,,,,

I like the little things, like the flag in 3D breaking the borders (from the chair page). But I don't like the yellow/blue combo in the form/list areas. It has a bit too much contrast.

Maybe some of the pictures could be a bit more 3D and break some of the boring type columns (no offense, you know what I mean). Overall it is a good job, just a tad bland.

Some of the fonts could be more interesting like "News for Singapore" etc. Just kind of stale.

Oh, and have that dog neutered!

Mitch's picture

No probs Wurx. Yeah

No probs Wurx.

Yeah blandness is my main concern, I thought breaking up the pages with bleeding images the maps and flags would help, but your right the columns could do with some variation, and better neg spacing. Think I need some inspiration to break it up a little. It's not my strongest point.

I was going to theme each header so it was kinda reminiscent to the story. ie. from the chair in scanned handwritting (to reflect the personal nature of the peice), the singapore in a style suggestive of asian patterns, the new york big and bold. Wasn't sure if it would make the doc a little childish and disjointed though? I guess it is all in the excecution.

I just wanna do the best job within all the constaints I have, which are pretty damn tight.

Wasn't sure how to attack the boxes on the last couple of pages, maybe I could make the transparencies on top of the images so they aren't so contrasting?

Thanks loads for your comments, they are appreciated and have reinforced my initail suspicions.

p.s. Could you imagine the size of the scapel needed to get them babies off!

Photo Correction

I have to agree about the photo of the golden retreiver looking sick. I've also had situations where a customer mandated that a certain photo be used that had a slight problem. Have you ever considered taking it under the digital knife and correcting the trouble area? [In this case it doesn't look like a particularly difficult adjustment to make]

One last consideration. I'm not a big fan of taking a given photo in a project and flipping it horizontially in another area of the piece. Most won't see that but it's noticable to a trained eye.

All-in-all it's a very well designed piece and I really like the 3D flags and map outline effect. Good work.

NRG, I was considering

NRG, I was considering taking them off, but you have just made that descision for me.

Anyone want any free Lab balls?

When you say he looks sick, in what way? The colour? The age of dog or just the them hanging nutts?

Thanks loads for the points raised, they are all usefull and constructive.

Thanks, it's appreciated.

Ball Sacks Look Sick

Sorry for the confusion about the dog looking sick. It's just that the ball sacks look like some sort of cancer growth.

wurx's picture

All joking aside

I can't believe how much better the dog looks minus the nads!

Mitch's picture

Well Wurx you're the only

Well Wurx you're the only person on 4 forums that spotted the maliganant nutts, and yes it does improve the photo, I think I will forward the castrated pair to you as a jpg prize to sit on your desk.

wurx's picture

Thanks

I would be very proud to have a pair of retriever nads on my desk, thanks!
