Thesis font combo suggestions needed

Hi,

I am writing my masters thesis on media and foreign policy. But I really really dont want to use Times or Arial for the body or title. Could some one make suggestion of what a good font-combo might be. The body text needs to be abt 11 - 12 Times New Roman and 1.5 to 2 spaced. Margins need to be 1.25" on the top and left and 1" on the bottom and right.

The document is goign to be atleast 100+ pages long and quite text heavy.

I am looking at the foreign policy in South East Asia and the font Quadraat kinda appealed to me in all-caps... but.. yeah.. I don't have that font.

I have the Adobe Font Folio CD, Font Bureau an Linotype Gold Edition CDs to choose from.

Thanks

Mylius is a good choice for body and any clean sans sherif would be good for headings with it. I say Mylius because if you buy the full font it will have non latin font types for it, which is very important for you i guess. there is nothing worth when you use different fonts for different languages.

if you have janson, it would be a great choice too, or you can try the interesting goudy old style - nicholas cochin combo; these two serif font really goes together well.

but any old typograhist would say: use bodoni, because among all fonts it is the easiest to read!

What about Caslon? I would like to use a goudy old style font for the body... The title font I want to be seif too but with some funk.

I always liket didot for big long papers.

like this:

btw, i've read this in a book on typography, and it had a (a bit) rough but helpful font usage chart:

______________ / poetry

_____________ /

_ renessaince/

____________ \

_____________ \literature

____________ /

___ baroque/

___________ \

____________ \social studies

___________ /

_ classiscist/

__________ \

____________ \technical

___________ /

egyptienne/

__________ \

___________ \advertisement

__________ /

_ sans-serif/

where the suggested type-styles are on the left, the usage is on the right.

Renessaince antiquas are like: Garamond, Plantin, Goudy, Palatino

Baroque antiquas are like: Fournier, Times, Janson (Tótfalusi), Caslon

Classicist antiquas are like: Bodoni, Didot, Corvinus, Zapf international

Egyptienne antiquas are like: Rockwell, Memphis, Karnak

Sans-serif fonts are like: Futura, Helvetica, and other sans-serifs.

the problems of this chart is:

1. Clarendon - or any other newspaper typefaces - are not listed; and there are no Ecltectic or Art Deco fonts.

2. there are exceptions: political poems usally need the weigth of Bodoni, and Walbaum (classicist) is also ideal for poems, as well as Sabon (renessaince) is a suitable typeface for technical writings.

Thank you so much. That is exactly th kind of guide I was looking for...

So according to the guide, I will be using a Baroque antiquas Janson or Caslon or maybe even a Didot for body. Now should I use a Sans Serif for the titles or stick with a Baroque... Since my research has to do with newspapers, should my titles be a Clarendon.

Basically, I am looking for suggestions for title fonts to go with the Janson or Caslon body. Thanks so much once again.

usally they say the more the two fonts are different, more they're going to fit; so i think you may use a sans serif font, or some different serif font - for headlines it's great to use tall typefaces, like bodoni poster (MT) (condensed) or the copperplate collection, or as sans serif: arial narrow or futura condensed.

try experimenting, and you'll suceed.

ps.: i will use cochin as headline font, and goudy for the body, they fit together perfectly!

Hi,

Thanks for all your well informed advice. I went ahead and used Cochin for titles, and old goudy for body.. and it turned out just great. So thanks a bunch.
