Thoughts on this site's design?
Rick (75 pencils) | Wed, 2007-09-05 23:58I figured I'd get some input from some trained professionals on what they think about the concept, layout, and design.
I'm thinking of adopting a similar format myself.

For me it's a bit confusing... Too many badges.

Man is that freakin ugly. I hope that if you choose that FORMAT you don't copy the DESIGN - cause it sucks.

Looks like one of those DIV Myspace layouts. I think the format could work, but I'd agree with JimD about the design - please don't imitate it.

Perfectly Lost Designs
Here was my train of thought.
Blogs as a whole have become rather homogeneous. Rounded corners, candy colored gradients, and bubble graphics. They lack personality and tend to adhere to a dogma of form over function. With the Web being as much a communication medium as it is a graphic one, that's not always so good.
What I liked about Yacht's site is that it obviously reflects his personality, it's also very open architecturally. While all of his info is on one page and in a column format, his content remain readily identifiable and easy to separate, which as someone who's put together a blog or two, I find very impressive.
I also like how he integrated his profile links without blocking his content, although like Ivan, I found the badges themselves abhorrent. For the love of God, no more text bubbles!
That being said, stylistically the whole page reminds me of a Napoleon Dynamite t-shirt. Whether that's good or bad depends on your tastes I guess.
Let's make this a learning experience. What could we learn from our observations of Yacht's page in our own designs?
Thanks for your input all.
CREATING HYPE | ENGAGING PEOPLE
I can see a little of what you are talking about (The Napoleon Dynamite-ness). But the problem I see with it, is I don't think that this site was intentionally trying to do that - where the clothing, setting, and characters from that movie were.
I'm not saying you couldn't make it work. I look forward to seeing your future project. :)

I wouldn't say this site is strong on function. Visually I found it to be somewhat muddled and lacking hierarchy.

The site design is okay, for a blog, but not necessarily a band. I'd play off the nautical theme in a rougher way (since that's de rigeur these days!) and use rougher edged graphics and a 'rusty' look.
The banner permanently placed at the bottom is annoying as heck. Why limit your design and browser real estate? It doesn't seem to serve any function. If there was a special event (playing on a huge Warped Tour or something) then I could see a reason for this being there.
Or you go the other way and go campy (think Captain and Tenille) which is the angle I think you've chosen but only half executed. Go all the way! :)

Not crazy about the scroll down, I would avoid it if I can. Too much info also.
in a nutshell, massive room for improvement.
where's the sense of design? or is it the lack of design
that it's going for?
too many sites like this already. run-of-the-mill, lack of concept,
and just not interesting. next...
