Tiger Mail Problem driving me nuts

I made the jump to Tiger tonight by doing a backup of my data and doing a wipe and install. Seemed to go ok until I got to importing my old email.
It brought in my mbox files ok but now when I go to check my mail from my pop server, it starts to download every message, not just the unread ones. Seeing as I have about 2500 messages on my server marked as read, it's going to take an ice age to needlessly download them down again.

How can I tell Mail to bugger off and just download the 6-7 new messages I know are there since I checked through webmail. Driving me slowly nuts as email is the document I rely on the most while freelancing and I need to keep those messages on the server in case I'm on the road without the laptop.

Any good answers will get a freshly baked muffin shoved in an envelope and FedExed.

CreativeBits also looks very funny with whatver text anti aliasing is on by default. Kinda smudgy and constrasty at the same time
