Converting bitmap logos to vector
Ivan | Thu, 2009-05-14 16:02
If you only have a bitmap logo, but really need a vector version, first you can look for it on BotW. Failing that you can try using a vectorization tool. Illustrator has such a feature, but the quality isn't great. CorelDraw's vectorization is much better, but not many of us use this application anymore. The best application that is also available as an online tool is Vector Magic. You can upload your bitmap file on this site and after a short calculation time you can download your nearly perfect vector file. Check out the attached vector result of the logo shown above.

Sapka means “hat” in Turkish. Logo and identity design for a vintage style ‘hat’ designer. The name comes from the turkish word, originally without any diacritic marks on top. In the logo, the word “sapka” is indicated with accent letters and changes into another language which does not exist yet.
Thanks for sharing! This is a great time saver.

Just use Live Trace in Illustrator. Keep it in the program you design in. Set the colors to two, if needed and let er rip... If you want to print in 4 colors, set to 4. Best thing that has happened to a pre-press department in years...
But, it's not very precise is it?
Correct. For complex logos that contain multiple colors/shading it creates chaos. However, most people do not use the preference option inwhich you can set the total amount of colors you desire (they simply use the default settings). The above logo would only require 1 color and thus would be rather simple to accomplish at no subscription cost (Vector Magic). I just think it is a highly overlooked tool in .ai
personally, i found vector magic (when it was free) to be much more accurate.
I agree. It's much more accurate than Illustrator. Adobe should buy the technology.
Background Removal allows you to easily remove the background of a vectorized image with only a few mouse clicks. Get rid of undesired white backgrounds and selectively remove other shapes that you don't want in your final result.
On the Review page there is now a Remove Background tool that you can use to simply click away any background portions of the result.
