Inkscape-Open Source SVG Application
Phosphor (201 pencils) | Wed, 2005-07-27 11:24I've been following the development of Inkscape for awhile now, and was just reminded of it by a blurb on Slashdot. Today's the day I'm gonna give it a run around the racetrack. Check out the Screenshots for a good visual overview of its capabilities. My complaint at this point is that the interface looks like Windows crap circa 1995, but it looks like it has some VERY cool abilities that I've not seen in other applications.

Open Source Scalable Vector Graphics Editor
Inkscape is an open source drawing tool with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape supports Creative Commons meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path, and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.
Inkscape's main motivation is to provide the Open Source community with a fully W3C compliant XML, SVG, and CSS2 drawing tool. Additional planned work includes conversion of the codebase from C/Gtk to C++/Gtkmm, emphasizing a lightweight core with powerful features added through an extension mechanism, and the establishment of a friendly, open, community-oriented development process.

I have enjoyed using it for years, unfortunately it's tough trying to use it for professional. Maybe not tough, just a hassle. Then there is also the stigmatism that goes with professionals using opensource software for design.

Dag Nabbit!
I have to troubleshoot so I can get X11 to run, as Inkscape says I don't have it installed.
But I do. And when I try to trash the X11.app in my Utilities folder and get a new version to install, the installer tells me I already have newer software installed on my machine.
So far, the only info I find has my eyes and brain swimming over all the required UNIX and command line crap.

"no mac version :("
Sure there is...otherwise I most likely wouldn't have posted about it.
BUT...It runs through the X11/XWindows application, which I know nothing about.
Yet.
Check this page @ SourceForge.net. It's the second file down, with the ".dmg" extension.
- Downloaded the DMG
- Opened the App, and got a pop message saying about X11
- Downloaded X11
- "newer version already installed on system " (not to my knowledge unless its inside tiger)
- Tried to run the app again, got the message again.... I give up - any ideas?

No ideas at all.
Think I'll wait for Inkscape version 1.0 and Mac OS 10.5.
:o(
X11 is the platform that enables *nux apps to run on Mac. Like Open office. I had it running sucessfully on my old Mac, I'll have to install it on my iMac and see if it works as it used to.
I was really looking forward to trying this on my PC at work, I was intending pushing this as our company's standard vector file editor. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to open ANY of the ai, eps or pdf files I threw at it, which isn't good as we have a large quantity of existing content created by outside sources. Bummer. Is this a known problem or is there something I could do to make it work?

This could be an opportunity where your testing and input can be of great use to the developers.
If you've ever been frustrated by the great divide that exists between major software developers and you as an end user, this may prove you with some satisfaction.
Explore the Inkscape site as well as the Sourceforge pages devoted to it and look for ways to write up and submit your suggestions and commentaries. The only thing you must keep in mind is that these people—above all else—value careful clearlyly written descriptions of how you use the application, what's giving you trouble and what you'vve done to try to troubleshoot or workaround problems you run up against.
