The iPhone apps every designer needs

The iPhone and iTouch are great companions for a designer when on the go. Besides the basic communication apps there are at least 10 applications you must carry with you to make the most out of your Apple pocket device.
The links below will take you directly to the iTunes Music Store where you can download the apps instantly.
Let's take a journey through a working week enhanced by your new iPhone apps.
Fring

On Sunday you use Fring to keep in touch and pick up leads to get a new job. It is a multifunction communication device that allows you to setup all your instant messaging accounts, including gTalk, yahoo IM, MSN among many others. Most importantly you can set-up Skype as well so you can make free or very cheap long distance calls over WiFi. Unfortunately you can't make Skype calls over the 3G network unless you jailbreak your iPhone.
Todo

On Monday you pick up the brief and get yourself organized by writing down your to-do list. If you use RTM or Toodledo then Todo is for you. If you prefer to have your to-do list on your iPhone only you can choose from plenty of free apps as well instead.
Dimensions

On Tuesday you visit the location and do some measurements. Dimensions is 3D tool case with 13 measuring tools animated with great 3D graphics. It can measure objects starting from a theoretical 0.15 mm up to a kilometer.
Air Sharing

You also pick up all the files you need and share it with your colleagues and your Mac. Air sharing is an essential application if you want to transfer files between your iPhone and computers wirelessly. You can also view these files on your iPhone once the transfer is complete.
YouNote

On Wednesday you start the brainstorming sessions. When you're working on a design problem ideas can come anytime and anywhere. It's important to jot them down quikly before you forget them. YouNote allows for recording information in many different ways including photo, text, audio or drawing among others. You can later tag these notes and back them up to your Mac.
Color expert or CliqCliq colors

Once you have an idea you start looking for elements to build your design from. Color expert is an interactive color wheel and swatch library that helps you capture, identify and showcase colors. Since the iPhone doesn't have a camera flash and the optics are quite small you can only capture images in daylight that are good enough as inspiration for color schemes. Color expert even includes Pantone colors in case you need to look up something quickly.
CliqCliq is similar tool that allows Photoshop or Illustrator color palettes to be emailed directly to yourself or to a collegue.
Throughout Thursday you record your working hours spent on the project with TouchClock and listen to White noise to keep you in work mood.
Stage Hand

On Friday morning you wake up tired from working all Thursday night. Finally you make your presentation with Stage Hand that not only to controls your Keynote presentation through WiFi, but also allows you to view the presenter notes. You deliver a perfect selling pitch.
Loading up with new experiences
You spend your Saturday getting inspired and making yourself ready creatively for the next job. You play with RjDj Album to experience active music that is generated by your movement and surrounding noise. You look at classic art on Art Envi Deluxe. You play with the Koi Pond before putting down your iPhone and meet real people in a real club.
On Sunday your creative cycle starts again with a brand new job and brand new experiences. Life's good.

But, I'm holding out for the iPhone Shuffle. lol
Seriously, I gotta get one of those damn things. Great article Ivan. Really news we can use.

Too bad they are running on an iPhone!
You people really need to admit defeat and go all Microsoft. Our Win Mobile software does all of this stuff too. It's not all "pretty" like this or as "user friendly" but it is what people really want. You people need to join the rest of the world!

This is an Apple oriented design community! What else do you expect?
He's just a joker impersonating Steve Ballmer. :)
Sometimes quite funny actually.
In reality he's an apple fanboy like us I'm sure. ;)

Are you positive, Ivan? His text so closely imitates his live performance antics...
"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."
— Frank Zappa
"Art -- the one achievement of Man which has made the long trip up from all fours seem well advised." - James Thurber
Is this "pile on Ballmer day"?
You Mactards are easily thrown off task. I believe the topic was what a waste of time it is to design useful apps for such a useless, bug-ridden, under-performing, sissy-boy product as the iPhone.

The "gentleman" doth protest too much, methinks.
Does that make you a PC-tard? Or a Wintard??? LOL

hope you get one! Its a wonderful product!
The iPhone is becoming a great platform. The applications you list replace most of the functionality of a laptop. Does anyone think it can replace a laptop completely? Of course you need a workstation for design work, but I think the iPhone can replace the bulky laptop during the day.

I think it can replace all functionality you would expect on the go. But it should not and will never replace the functions you would perform at the desk. It just not efficient to design on a small screen with your fingers or a stylus.
That being said, I really really wish the iPhone would go to all carriers, and not just AT&T. It's so depressing.
Guess I'll have to settle for the iPod Touch (for now). :(

I downloaded Dimensions and gave it a test run on my iPhone and I can't say I'm too impressed. Measuring distances by inputting how far you walk in ten steps doesn't seem too cool. I mean, we do that already right?
As far as the other tools are concerned, I have to admit I'm having a difficult time figuring them out. Other reviews mention similar experiences.
Am I missing something here? Seriously, I'm considering a refund.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Yes, it's not laser precision for sure. I agree. It's ok for rough estimates.
