If you're a heavy gMail user you may want to try out Mailplane application. Besides the cool icon the application offers several productivity enhancements listed below in order of importance:
- It's a dedicated application just for email so, it tends to be much faster than either Safari or Firefox — no more beach-ball or stuck screens
- It let's you switch between gmail or google app accounts with a double click — saves you a lot of typing
- Has a menubar status icon that let's you know the number of unread messages at a glance
- Drag and drop file attachment — feels like an offline app
- mailto: URL support — opens email links directly in Mailplane
- Growl integration — you get instant notification about events
- iPhoto and Mediabrowser integration for easy sending of resized images and other media
- And several more features
If you gave it a try, let me know your opinion!

I used Mailplane pretty exclusively for a while when it was in beta. But I had a hard time rationalizing a payment for what's basically an interface to the Gmail webpage.
It does have a lot of glory, but being a heavy Gmail user, I prefer to streamline the usage of the web application by limiting myself to browser access. Use of the key command shortcuts in Gmail make its use a breeze, and by running one small app (Gmail Notifier) I can get the only missing thing that Gmail doesn't already offer: notification of new mail without logging in.
Great software though for those who like desktop apps.
Were you able to find a solution for drag and drop attachments?
As someone who works for an email company I can honestly say that SaaS and Web-based apps are always better. Get it from anywhere at anytime.

If you use Gmail and want a desktop app, just use OSX's Mail - it's free and has a lot more functionality. I have 3 gmail accounts set up in Mail using IMAP - works perfectly.
