The Principles of Design

Jammo's picture

Sometimes when im working on a design, I try different ideas and it just doesn't feel right and I sometimes dont feel like asking someone for help. I could be sitting there for hours looking at something thinking, " I know there is definatly something wrong but - what the heck is it thats screwing up my work!?".

If your only design knowledge is how to use photoshop filters and free download web templates or if get that same feeling of "somethings wrong".. Then you will definatly want to read this

Read article at Digital Web Magazine

(this has been edited from the original )

About reposting

Hmm, I kinda feel that this post should have been handeled differently, tho I liked it and it was a good article, it gave the impression apart from the little blurb link on the top that this was an creativebits production. It wasn't really clear enough that this is in fact a repost of another site, so perhaps just link to it instead ?

Jammo's picture

ok..

thanks andreas, the author has been emaileda already.. I did put at the start and end of the article that it was from digital web magazine. So I hoped that would let people know as they would have seen that (unless they scanned past it ;) . If the author doesnt like this being shown this way (which isnt probably as useful to us members here), then i will remove the article and just have a link.

Another Book to add to the list

  • Design for Communication: Conceptual Graphic Design Basics by Elizabeth Resnick
  • It's a good tool, not to mention a few of my pieces from when I was a student are featured in it.

As much as I appreciate the article, my prudent nature when it comes to "appropriating" content would dictate that FIRST you get permission, THEN you reproduce it.

Most creatives prefer to have the right to say how, when and where their work will be used. I know I'd be pretty pissed off if somebody "appropriated" my work and put it out for public consumption, and THEN asked if I minded; once it's "out there" there's no reeling it back in.

    Yes, I agree w/ Phosphor.

Yes, I agree w/ Phosphor. I'd be pissed too, but flattered.

I loved reading it over though, I haven't read such basics since I was in school a good 7 years ago. Its quite easy to lose touch with the basics when you end up having to juggle new languages/technologies and a fast paced work environment.

I love comparing my maturing tastes with what the basics would dictate. Since they become inituitive quickly its nice to step back and consider how my current work falls into these fundamentals. How would my old Design professor say?

    Thanks for finding

Thanks for finding that article Jammo. It reminds me of the book, The Non Designers Design Book. This would make a great entry into the new weblink section.
