Use Gmail as a personal information repository

For those of you that have a web mail account such as Gmail, there is a whole range of features waiting to be used. One I especially like is the plus addressing or inserting the '+' sign after your name eg if your domain is 'your.name@gmail.com', then add the plus sign like this: your.name+tutorial@gmail.com

So how is this handy?
If you make labels in Gmail for different topics eg 'tutorials' to keep any articles on your web trawls, you could set up a filter to automatically file away anything with the '+' address to this label. Then in Mac OSX – I use Tiger, all you have to do in Safari is mail the article from the browser by invoking the apple & I keys (Apple+I ), this brings up Apple Mail with the article as an html ready document and all you need to do is add the 'your.name+tutorial@gmail.com'

In Gmail, if set-up as above, the article will arrive filed in the appropriate label. So you can have all you articles stored for future use.

This is fun. Does the new email sent to a certain label show up in the inbox as well or only under the specific label?

Only the 'Label'.
I like this as it keeps things tidy and the inbox empty or nearly empty in my case!

Just cool to know:
You can put as many '.''s in your email address:

y.o.u.r.n.a.m.e@gmail.com =

not so handy, but it makes it more difficult to spell it wrong.

I have my gmail set up under apple mail. How would this make any difference? -- Experienced Un user : ) - B

Your ISP should support '+' addressing. Most do. Since Gmail does, then the mail will arrive in Gmail and Apple Mail will pick it up–dots and all.

However, going back to the original blog, using Gmail as an info repository, some of you might find it handy to have a 'personal knowledge bank' anyway you can access Gmail

Thanks for the tip. That's a great use for Gmail. I've been using Notational Velocity similarly, but getting the info off my computer and into Gmail is a great idea.

I've heard about using a gmail account this way, but the Safari trick definitely inspired me to get started. The only problem is that had to switch my creativebits theme from tarmac to concrete so it wasn't so hard on my eyes in gmail.
