Top designer says: World cup logo embrassing
Ivan | Thu, 2006-06-15 16:53I was surprised to see the logo the first time in a supermarket. I could not believe it is the logo of the World Cup. I thought some self made designer messed it up for the display. I never got to like it since than and I'm so happy to see it's not all in my head. Apparently somebody else didn't like it either. Great read!

Ivan i totally agree. I think the lead on that project worked for the fifawc group, but ultimately their research was based on demos and concepts from a few years ago, and it was never changed so to speak. I could be wrong but that logo is almost 5 years old, and its graphical elements are adolescantly procured.
If i saw this logo on display anywhere, id laugh along with it....=)
Germany is always ahead in desing concepts and it´s culture is so rich and has tons of good things to be proud of, and they have so much to say... Someone in class said that looks like a first year´s desing 101 logo, and I think they are so right, for us who love this art of communicating and sending messages trhough logos and integrated desing is a shame, to see one of the best desingners feel this way, any one can do circles and happy faces and its just that, perhaps a first freehand exercice, where you learn to handle circle tools and vectors, a logo has to be the face of many people behind it and here they don´t, its just to throw it toghether so they can get to the point, it´s simple it´s true, but if you ever get to see other events as Seul-Japan(2002) or Greece(2004) they had something to say, they reflect their compromise with their country, I guess here is the compromise of leaving selfishnes aside and work for the purpose and its the game, that millions of people live for, this is a world celebration and should reflect the country, the culture and the colors of the land, as a whole, If corean-japaneese designers could why not Germany? Gropius, Knadisnky and Klee are rolling over in their graves....

I don't think it's not that bad...Nothing to write back home about, sure, but it invokes happiness, always a good sign for a popular logotype.
so basically, you are contradicting your advice with your feelings. bravo *rolling eyes lol. And logos dont invoke anything unless theres a huge budget behind it heh.
Is seeing Italy win this tournament and restore some dignity to our name in football.

I found I've had a long time to digest the logo. It has been around for 5 years, so I don't find it as jarringly terrible as I once did. I do find there is a detatchment between the logo and the wordmark though. I would almost think a fun handwritten kinda script font would have meshed better with the logo.
