Off Topic - Visit to NYC
Mintsauce (1004 pencils) | Tue, 2008-09-09 22:43Hey Guys,
My wife and I will be visiting NYC next week. One of the companies we work for will be at the Fashion Coterie. It's my first visit and although I love travelling I'm not fond of the "tourist route".
On my list:
1) Central Park
2) Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum
3) Apple Store
4) A good Jazz show
Does anybody have some insider advise on where to go? We'll be in Manhattan (paid for by client company) and will only have access to public transport (no taxis). Any secret restaurant spots that are unknown gems - affordable. Some place we shouldn't miss? Any advise would be appreciated.

Hard Rock Cafe, baby.
Just don't order drinks that require a glass. Bottled beer or coolers would be the order of the night.

On an art note, MOMA. On the trail of tourism, France's gift: The Big Green Lady in the Harbor.

Not to freak you out, but NEVER, EVER get into anything but a yellow taxi—just in case you do decide to take one, as they are relatively inexpensive in the city.
Do not go to Central Park at night—whatever you do! Only during the day.
Not sure if you're a museum buff but my favorite museum is the MoMA and the Guggenheim.
Definitely head down to SoHo and Little Italy. Amazing art galleries and locally owned coffee houses. The BEST!!!!
Washington Square Park by NYU is pretty cool. Very bohemian and eclectic, to say the least. Even at night, you'll find the BEST street vendors ever.
If you like Chinese food, you NEED to eat Chinese in China Town. OMG, I'm salivating just thinking about it.
Otherwise, have fun and be safe. You'll have a blast!!!!

not much left of little italy any more, it's mostly been overrun by big chinatown. at least that was my impression last time i was there. very sad. while i love chinatown, i miss some of the places i used to go regularly in little italy.
if you're looking for design stuff, AIGA will be opening two shows next week. 50 books/50 covers and Get Out the Vote 2008.

I didn't realize that, because unfortunately I haven't been back since '03, sadly. My brother just moved back there in January, so I KNOW I will be visiting him soon (when I get a job).

even in 03 it was a shell of its former self. i remember going to little italy 10 years ago and seeing how few blocks of it were left.
And I lived in NYC from 1988–1990.
Oh well, maybe because I was just in awe of having the advantage of living in one of the best cities in the world.

Jazz: Go to the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note. Can't lose with either choice. Union Square has a farmer's market every Saturday, I think. It's right on the subway line (4,5,6 lines)

Was in Manhattan last year with the wife. Loved it, but we were only there for 4 days. Not enough time to see everything!

It was packed at 10pm. . . they were renovating . . . Made me wish that the Towers were still there. . . THAT would have been impressive! :P
Oh well my trip was a blast so I can't say the ESB was a TOTAL flop!
