Trapping Text in InDesign?

I'm having problems trapping text in InDesign. The text I have has a drop shadow that is not knocking out. I'm sure I'm missing something easy!

Do you mean the text itself is knocking out? Or do you mean the drop shadow is knocking out? Because I think drop shadow is suppose to overprint the background to give an effect of a shadow.

The shadow prints fine, but it also overprints the whole text. The design was Black/Silver ...the text was black with a silver shadow. When it printed the silver completely overlayed the black text.

I want the black text to knock out the silver below it.
