Travelling to Tokyo
suborior (133 pencils) | Tue, 2005-08-16 16:36So I'm headed to Tokyo for a couple weeks. I went and got the international adapter kit thingy for my powerbook, and an extra battery for the long flight.
I actually just got an emergency contract that I'll take up my trip there the plane. I'm supposed to send my work as soon as I get to Japan. So now I'm pretty worried about finding access.
Anyone been to Japan and used Wi-Fi? Afterglow, weren't you in Singapore recently? Was it easy to find net access? Also, does anyone know if the Starbuck's WiFi accounts work in starbucks anywhere in the world?

Tokyo is the most advanced city in the world. I bet there is WiFi in public toilets. :D
I was in Singapore recently too, there are many places with WiFi.
Good! I was more worried they threw out wifi a decade ago for something even more advanced!

I had no problem connecting in the Airport. I signed up with Boingo when in Australia and can still use it throough one of their partner wifi companies in Dublin.
If you're passing through the airport in Singapore while jetlagged be sure to drop in at the electronics booth in the transfer lounge. A friendly old man will quite sweetly persuade you to buy gadgets that you have no earthly use for.
On a side note I saw a universal power plug on sale recently that could be used by road warriors and it also had a usb port for charging your gadgets at the same time. Trying to find the address as I want to buy some myself.

I'm in Osaka, Japan and there are quite a few open-access hotspots. You'll find this site helpful but of course print out the info before you go:

The listing for Tokyo is here:

BTW. I run a small blog/site called http://FreeStuffFromJapan.com giving away cool little fun things from Japan. If anyone can help spread the word I would be most grateful (del.icio.us links, blog mentions or even emailing a link to friend you think might be interested in stuff from Japan). To date we have had 2 draws, given away 14 sets of prizes and have almost 100 sign-ups. No complicated sign-up, no spam, just a simple monthly draw. Next draw at the end of the month :)
