Trommeportalen.no b/w-sketch #1
Anders (413 points) | Mon, 2009-10-26 20:49Hello,
First off, my name is Anders, and I am the second person in the two-man firm Epic design. I believe you guys gave some critique to Robin's earlier logo sketches (the other person in Epic design). We are two 17 year old boys studying media and communication, and this firm was originally for one of the subjects we have in school. We also do this to practice graphic design, as we currently don't have much time for it during school.
Anyway, so my client is the administrator for a Norwegian drummer's forum called "trommeportalen.no". The current logo that he uses on merchandise (tees and hoodies) is just "TP" in the font that I used in this logo.
What I thought was that his old logo neither said it was for drummers, nor that it was a forum. When I made this I thought drums and communication. The concept is basically a bassdrum with mounted ride-cymbal and cowbell merged with a speech bubble.
I sketched out several ideas, and made two of them digitally. These are just black/white sketches - I wanted to hear what you guys think before continuing.
I posted the second sketch in a separate thread. Also sorry if my English is sloppy, it's not my first language.
P.S. In before tl:dr.

Very obvious and cliched. Only way the concept could get more cliched in fact is by attaching a telephone somewhere on the drum set. Also, when I look at the thumbnail, it doesn't look like a drum, and my mind has to take a few moments to figure out what I'm looking at.
Also you said you show two ideas in two posts, but I only see one: the speech bubble drumset.

You are right, what I meant to say was two different setups for the logo, not two concepts. Sorry about that.
Now that you mention it, I guess it's indeed quite an obvious one… I can also imagine the whole speech bubble-thing has been done to death and beyond already.
After lurking around here for a few months, reading sarcastic, harsh but still very constructive comments from you Leaky, I finally know what it feels like to be "Leaky Penny'd".
I thank you for your feedback, and will go back to the drawing board with this one, hopefully finding a better concept.
Hey man, you need a thick hide in this field. It's one thing to be harshly critiqued, it's another thing to be torn down by a client. I know of one or two times where I was ready to pack it all up and give up, just cause I followed my head and decided not to copy another artists work for a client. He got what I did, and was speechless. And no, not in a good way. At ALL.
Don't worry, if your project has potential you'll get sarcasm but help as well. If it really sucks...well, you'll know :)

Hey - whatever happened with that Epic logo? With this one, I have to believe that the letters TP can be turned into a basic drum set somehow. Forget the cowbell unless the client says "More cowbell".
Obviously you're getting a rep, Leaky. :)
Apparently so, now if you'll excuse me, I have to try and get Ashton Kutcher on the phone so I can dicuss my idea for a show called Leaky Penny'd ;)
