Tropicana: Old > New > Old-New?
Donateko (125 points) | Sat, 2009-03-21 16:00I know most Tropicana consumers and even several designers hate the new [soon to be faded back to the original] Tropicana design. I however, really like the new design, I think it is tasteful and its modern minimalism works well. I think the design itself is not the problem, but the people not liking change is.
What is your opinion about the Tropicana controversy?

I like the old one. The minimalist look doesn't fit this brand.
Isn't the orange with the straw kind of a trademark for them? Makes their product easily noticable for consumers. I can understand why some may be upset. When you go to the store looking for the item you always buy, you are looking for it as it was the last time you bought it, so you may have to spend more time actually looking for it when the packaging changes. There are some products I buy I only remember by the packaging not the brand so if it changes I may no longer purchase that one. And I like the original. I think many products are trying to make their packaging look more modern/minimal and with that everything just starts to look the same/boring.

Of the new packaging, the only thing I do like is the rounded orange-like cap with the peel texture. This minimalist look MIGHT work in an ad, but in the packaging world--especially with a food product--I find it fails. To me, it looks more like the placards sitting on your breakfast table in a Howard Johnson's.
Also, if they were going to turn the product's name on its side...another thing I dislike--then why wouldn't they enlarge it to run the full gamut of the package's height...bleed it off the edge even as a bit of a wraparound?
Overall, it looks too generic and doesn't say fresh orange juice like the original with a straw coming out of the fruit. I think if they were going to the expense of new packaging, a better design could have been developed.

I don't like the design, but I do like the new cap and the discounted prices because the stores aren't moving them. :)
MMM, I'm going to go have a glass right now...
I think the new design makes the product look like all the competing "made from concentrate" juices on nearby shelves. FAIL.
