Type Tool In Photoshop CS2
pina_cten (11 pencils) | Tue, 2008-01-08 19:50OK I finally own my own photoshop CS2.
I am new in photoshop, so even the simpliest thing for the savvies out there, I don't know how to do so please bare with me :)
I was trying to create glitter text and of course the first step is to create the text. Per the type instructions, I opened a new document, set the size then I clicked on the T. All that seemed pretty easy for a biginner like me then there comes the problem. As I was typing, I noticed that the I-BEAM is soooooo small that I couldn't see what I was typing but it did create the type on the layer pallette. I tried changing the fonts, the size but nothing happened. It was very, very small as small as the period at the end of this sentence. I couldn't create the glitter text because I couldn't see what I was doing. What am I doing wrong here? Everything seemed normal when I'm adding a Text on an image, but it gives me problems when it comes to just typing some words on a document. I hope this question makes sense to all the experts out there. I NEED HELP!
Can someone help me please!

... but if you zoom in on the page you should be able to see it provided the text is not 2 points in size or something really small - there is a zoom tool - the magnifying glass in the tools palette, but there are also the following shortcuts:
mac
Zoom in Cmd-Space-Click or Cmd-Plus(+)
Zoom out Option-Space-Click or Cmd-Minus(-)
pc
Zoom in Ctrl-Space-Click or Ctrl-Plus(+)
Zoom out Alt-Space-Click or Ctrl-Minus(-)
Thank you for your advice. I'll try doing that when I get back on my project a little later. I sure hope that, that is the true solution, if not I'll be back on line begging for some help again... I'll be begging anyway because I have a whole lot to learn, so stand by all :) thanks again!
Sorry... That just makes me giggle. :)
If you're doing the type of stuff that you find on MySpace and the like, then you also want to make sure that you're designing at 72 ppi (Pixels-Per-Inch). Look under the "Image" Menu and select "Image Size" and set your height and width there and set your resolution to 72 ppi.
You can still zoom in and out when working on detailed stuff, but check the bottom left corner of your PS window. There should be a percentage there (by default). 100% means that the art that you are creating (if working at 72 ppi) is at the same size it will appear on the web.
If you're image is at 72 ppi, and you're viewing at 100%, and the text is still too small, just select the text with the text tool and change the point size to your liking.
By the way, post a link if you're following a tutorial somewhere. I'd like to see what you're doing.

I knew my question would make you guys laugh :)
but I was prepared for it. Yes I'm trying to create glitter text like those we all see on myspace and stuff. I'm following the instructions on the photoshop cs2 it self. I'll try the zooming tool to see if that works. I sure hope that, that is the problem. Thank you for the great advice on the image size. I wasn't even thinking about that and obviously that's something that I need to know :) Thanks again. If you have any other advices that would help me learn, I welcome all of them :)
I guess the glitter text is fine, but please if you ever want to design something don't design in photoshop as the program's name suggested is for photos only. (just can't stand all that inner, outer, super glow text that you see in tacky ads and design)

Thank you for your advice.
Do you have any suggestion on which program or software I should use for designing? I really like glitters, and colors so I'm pretty much focusing on that. Any suggestions?
Which software is easy enough for me to create a nice glittering images and text?
Well, first learn HOW to design. The software doesn't do it for you. :) You can use photoshop for your designs (I think the don't design with photoshop comment to be a bit misguided) but usually starting in Illustrator is more flexible because vector graphics aren't limited by size or resolution.

Thank YOU, nat - photoshop "ONLY" for photos? I think not!
To the OP, you'll learn as you move forward with your design experience which programs suit what you're trying to accomplish most effectively. Each program has a very special function they provide, that is true, but there's no rule that you can only use InDesign to make a brochure or Illustrator to create a drawing or Photoshop to create a special effect. Learn each program and use each for their strengths, but have some fun and make 'em do what you want every now and then, too - you learn that way.
It's not showing up!!! I keep clicking on the T to enter text, then on the canvas and nothing is showing up!! But at the same time, under the layers palette, you can see the type layer and what I inputted. HELP!!! :(
Thanks!!
Repair permissions on your computer. Restart. If that doesn't work then trash your photoshop preferences (search for 'photoshop' and move all .pref and .plist files attached to photoshop to the trash; restart photoshop).

Lol...success. Thanks so much!! Why does that happen and it is something I should check frequently or only when that kind of thing happens??
Thank you!!! :)
Not sure what part of it worked for you? :)
Try to repair permissions on your comp at least once a month for best performance and to catch issues. Restarting is always a good first step too, though using Tiger I hardly ever have to these days.

I don't have Tiger yet...Had heard/read mixed reviews. Advice/Suggestions??
Thanks again for your Photoshop help :) I'll be sure to check in if anything else comes up!! :)
Again, which step worked for you? The permissions repair or preference trash?
Tiger's great, just got it (Leopard is the latest op sys and I'm waiting for a while to get on it; lots of CS issues in 10.5) and it runs faster than Panther did, not that it needed to, and I'm actually a fan of widgets now even though I didn't see the point in having the internet on my computer even MORE readily accessible. Ha ha.

I'm a dork. I have Tiger, not Leopard. I typed it the other way around.
And to clarify, the preference trash worked :)
And yeah the whole widgets thing taking over isn't half bad. The Mac version of Quicken has one and I love it!
P.S. Took a look at your profile and IT'S not half bad. I'm looking to become a Photoshop expert and have been harassing everyone I know for help. Any suggestion on books, tutorials, etc???
What did you like about my profile? :P
Adobe's website actually has some great tutorials:

That you're a linguistics-driven, bass playin' computer nerd :) lol...I'm easily amused. I love languages too (Speak almost 4), have always wanted to learn to play the bass, and am self-taught computer nerd. Just funny :)
I'll check out those tutorials and let you know!! Thanks :)
Sorry, how rude of me! :)
And you have Nat in your name...Natalie perhaps? Very cool you're into bass. You should subscribe to the Bass Player Magazine forum here: http://forums.musicplayer.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=cfrm&c=7

Yeppers! No pics of my daughter for obvious reasons. I think I found your blog; you talk a lot about Valborg Eve, right? Add me as a friend and we'll talk some more. I'm from NorCal too... :)P

Thanks for your advice. The very thing I'm great at is designing, but designing with softwares is where I lose my shine. That's why to start off, I was hoping there's a software that's friendly enough for me to learn as if I've know it :)
I've only have been working with photoshop for a couple of days and yet I've already learned a lot of course with a help of people like you :) but I do have another problem and it is saving my file for the web. I wanted to put the glitter text on my website. My glitter text is done and I am now trying to save it as web. I've optimized it and saved it as image only gif, which I think it's the only option I could use other than HTML and the setting is set at default because the other option sdoesn't seem relevant for web. When I tried to pull the file back to on my website, the isn't there. What's wrong here? What did I do wrong?
PS: Please don't ask me put provide you a link to my website because it's not ready yet :) I'll make sure to link it later though :)
Thanks in advance
In order for it to save to the web. Otherwise, you're losing those filters, because you probably have it saved as a psd (Photoshop document). You'll need to flatten the image first and then go to save for the web. Basically, what it's doing at that point is taking all of the layers that you created the filters/text in and flattening it into one big image—no filters. That's probably why you're losing the glittering, or whatever it is you're talking about. =P
I hope this helps. Good luck.

designing in photoshop is just out of the question well if you are looking to do it professionally. every place I have worked for before and also at school you design on illustrator and multiple page documents on Indesign (also quark express but that's old school) so I recommend to use illustrator, which is a great program to work on and if you like some of those glows that I don't recommend you to use from CS2 the new illustrator has also some filters

Hi All,
It's me again :( I was excited for a minute because I actually succeeded in creating the glitter text for my website. I optimized it, then saved optimized as, I named it, then saved as image only gif under defaulted settings per save options. I saved the file both in my picture and my document folders. Just when I thought I was done and ready to post the image on my website, I went to go and tried to grab it from my folders and they are not there. I couldn't find the files, but when I went back to my computer I found it there. I don't know what I'm doing wrong? Per member advice, I have to flatten it and I did that. Still I wasn't able to post my work on my website. How do we post our photoshop files on our website? I'm following instructions very carefully, but nothing seem to work as far as saving the files for web. It's on my computer but It seem to disapear when I'm browsing to insert the image on my website. Can you feel my frustrations? Need More Help from the experts out there please! :) I'm keeping my chin up. I know I'll get it with your help :)
Thanks in advance!
Is it in your site root folder where your website files are? Or are you just grabbing it from your computer's hard drive? You have to put it in your site root folder FIRST in order for it to be in your site (I think).
I'm assuming since you're doing a save for the web, that's it automatically saving it as RGB. If not, double-check that. If it's not saved as RGB, the image won't show up at all.
Also, save as a jpg, not a gif. You have more options with a jpg online than with a gif. A gif was an extension many moons ago before the internet had millions of colors, or whatever. I hope I'm explaining this correctly.
Otherwise, if none of these are working, I'm at a loss. I'm not very good at website design/creation, so I'm sure there's someone else out there who could figure it out.
Good luck.

I saved the files under my computer, my documents and my picture folders. Should I be saving it somewhere else?
On the other hand, my settings are exactly what it should be (I believed) when I optimized the document it only gives me an option to either save as image only gif or image and HTML, it does not give me an option to save as JPEG. I'm really lost... some one please shine the light on me :)
