Under Covers
jferguson757 (93 pencils) | Thu, 2008-02-28 17:36A cover I did for a mix group I belong to. The theme of the mix was supposed to be cover songs. It's Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan (Dylan having been a huge influence to Jimi). I'll admit...I REALLY need to work on my typography skills.

The type was a little bit hard to read but who cares?! This looks great. Will it remain in black and white or will color be added?

i tried several different versions that included color via some water color scans. i didn't like them as well as the black and white. so it'll stay this way. i would like to make it into a screen print t-shirt too...but that'll have to wait for a weekend when i have nothing going on so i can learn.
Love those go-media inspired vector collages.
Just one question - is there any kind of legal loopholes you'll need to go through in order to use Jimi Hendrix's image? (And I assume that's Bob Dylan on the flipside? - Not a big Bob Dylan person, so I've no clue!)
oooch...hmm...never thought about that. i'm tempted to say that there probably isn't much of a problem with it since it's been significantly altered from the original and i haven't made any money off of it. having said that though, i have zero clue and will look into it if i ever try to sell it. but i have zero intention of it being commercial so i'm not too worried about it. You'll not see nothing like
The Mighty Quinn.
Those very lyrics inspired the selection of my youngest son's name.
Smart how you've depicted the link between the two artists, and your font workup is amazing.
What's up next in this line--Elvis and Roy?

hehe...yeah i'm gonna do an elvis/roy on velvet! :D
This is great!
I would only recommend making the type a little easier to read. Originally I thought it said "Under Lovers". "Under Covers" is a fantastic title, and I think making the type a little clearer and more legible will strenthen this entire design and empower your choice of words.

Thanks!
Velvet. Of course.
Might I'd also suggest going as far as to slap a pair of shades on both gentlemen and then wrapping some honkin' sideburns on either end of Under Covers. Or, will this one be a sequel? Between the Vinyls? Stuck in the 8-Tracks with You?

haha! that literally made me lol.
Gotta love the Mutlu font. Most people probably won't notice, but as I'm familiar with the font, the "U" looks quite distorted.
I would definitely make the "C" in "covers" more legible. Other than that, I didn't have a problem reading it.
Overall I like it. Being really picky with you, I just see a bunch of elements from Vecteezy or some other free vector site pushed together. (The tree, etc.) I would try to clean it up more so that everything under the type looks like one element, not a bunch of vectors piled up. This is most a problem around Hendrix's shoulders.
Hope that helps, keep up the good work. :)

yeah, the "U" was transformed to give it more of a left tilt. the regular "U" in the font made it look too asymmetrical. so when you say to clean up around the shoulders...is that to help the legibility or just that it's too busy?
Too busy. Instead of looking like one element of artwork, it looks like you pasted vector after vector there. Argh, I don't know how else to explain, sorry. . .I really need more sleep.

i'm tired too, so that made perfect sense. :D
