USB drive wants to be unmounted??

I have a USB external hard drive that is connected to a hub. When I sleep my G5, then wake it, I get a message that the drive was not properly unmounted. However, if I plug the drive directly into a G5 USB port and sleep the computer, I do not get that message when it wakes.

Why do I get the message when the drive is plugged into the hub and not when directly into the computer, and am I risking damage if I don't un-mount it each time while in the hub?
