How to optimize your site for Google?

Nobody knows. The formula for ranking pages at google is one of their best kept secrets. So, I'd like to preempt that everything I speculate here are just my uneducated guessings. I have to be careful, because I'm not supposed to hack the Google formula and I certainly won't even try that. By doing that I would be risking the cb ranking to be reset to zero, like it happened with WordPress.org recently for a different serious reason. Therefore I hope that this topic stays within the boundaries of a Sunday afternoon informal discussion and won't go into technical details.

Google ranking:

You have a great web site. You have great content. You update frequently. Still, you don't have traffic. Why? There can be many reasons, but search engine ranking is one of the most important factors. For most web sites, a big percentage of the external traffic comes from search engines, nowadays mostly Google. Many of the visitors who become regular readers are finding sites through search engines, rather than referrals from other sites or personal connections. The higher your site shows among the search engine results, the more chance you have for people to click on your link and get to know your great site. So what to do to have high google ranking?

Firefox ads lame?

Funny Firefox ads
I have to give credit to whoever created these ads. They are great viral tools and I'd like to do my part in creating hype around them, because the more people use Firefox the better for all parties. Even MS wouldn't mind I guess, since they are not making money selling IE. So kudos, good job! However, I guess there is always room for improvement.

Top 10 design pitfalls: No.2 - Bad type

Ferrari and Nikon

Have you ever felt that a logo just doesn't fit the great brand that is behind it? That happens usually because of bad or boring type. When you design a logo avoid this mistake like vampire the holy water. So many times I see good logos with good symbols all ruined by a logotype that is just simply a not even a well chosen font. So, what can we do about it?

Managing growth

As cb is growing it may become more difficult to keep up with all the posts. To fight the information overload I'd like to give a quick overview of some features that will hopefully help the case.

Quick presentation of your images

Windows users had a slideshow feature for years. But Mac users didn't have such feature built into the Finder.

Panther users have to drag several images simultaneously into Preview and then choose the View/ Fullscreen menupoint. Navigation is performed by the arrow keys on the keyboard. Unfortunately the image quality and the controls are not that great in Preview.

Enlarging images part five

One thing that can help your enlarged images to look better is increased contrast for the blury details. One of the best ways to do it is to use the high-pass filter.
