Using the iPhone as a portfolio

danielerossi's picture

I'm working on my offline illustration portfolio and was wondering your opinions on using the iPhone to show my work instead. The reason is some of my work was made on the computer so the colours won't be the same once printed out.

Would it be too awkward to use the iPhone? The screen too small? Would it turn off art directors/interviewers?

Just a thought. I'll also be including my portfolio samples on my iPhone anyway for those chance encounters so I always have my portfolio on me. Just wondering about using it in the formal interview setting.

Good idea or bad idea?

I definitely wouldn't use it

IMO, this shows laziness. The fact that you're not taking the time to bring them a physical hard copy portfolio, will be a huge turn-off. Not that I know this first hand, of course, but I can't imagine any art director wanting to hire you after this.

Not only that, the whole reason behind a portfolio review (aside from the obvious of looking at your work), is they like to physically handle/touch your work. See it in 3D if you will. Showing them something on your iPhone is strictly 2D as well as tiny in comparison.

That's why I have my portfolio uploaded to my website, so if they want to view it privately while they're in front of their computers, they can easily go to my website.

if you're going to an interview and want to show something electronically, bring a laptop. your ipod screen is far too small to do your work justice in an interview anyway.

Nor good or bad...

It's terrible! People want to look at your portfolio at a good size, to see details in your work. To do this it has to be at a fairly large size. In some cases a laptop might be used as well, if you have things such as Flash work or even web work to show. But pulling out your phone and showing me your portfolio, your pride and joy, on such a small screen...well...no. I wouldn't even take the time to look at it to be honest.

I like the idea.

I'd keep a copy of it on your iPhone for informal stuff and pre-meets, i'd use it as a precursor to a full pitch where you then send them in a full portfolio on disc and in print.

Thanks everyone!

I had a gut feeling it wouldn't be a good idea but needed to hear from my peers. You're absolutley right, onegirlcreative. It wouldn't put me in a good light if I didn't show the amount of work (and care) I put into my work.

And everyone else who chimed in, you're right too, the screen would be too small. I've seen my works a thousand times so I didn't realize it.

Plugz, I'm going to use my iPhone in the way you described: for informal scenarios.

I did

But it was because they wanted to see me right away and I was still putting together the cd version (flashy) so I brought my iPod touch and basically let them use it. They were impressed with it and went "ooohhh" and "ahhh" but I didn't get the job. LOL I was too pricy for them. Don't get me wrong, it didn't HINDER my pitch, just didn't make them sign me up right away! So I'd say I'd say its cool and like everything else you need to follow up!

Ah, but did they "ohhh" and "ahhh"...

the portfolio or the Ipod? Cause I won't lie, to this day I'm still impressed by mine! :P

If it's for a spontaneous portfolio showing with no access to the internet readily available, it could be used as a teaser, but NOT going into an interview!

LOL BOTH!

Dude! hehe

They didn't actually TOUCH it. . . they were afraid. . . so I just showed them. it was two people. What helps s that if the pic is hirez enuf I can zoom into sections so they can read the copy. :)

The SAME idea applies to the touch as is it does to the book. I ONLY put my best pieces! so there r a total of about 10 pieces and some of those are campaigns What helps is that I have a few DIFFERENT 'playlists' so that I can just open one that would have different pics and in a different order depending on who I'm meeting. So one would be 'Corporate' the other 'Sales' you get the drift.
