Variance logo 3rd go
pmathews (77 pencils) | Tue, 2010-05-18 16:53So this weekend I took a step back did some research and this is what I came back with.
My target is 18-30 year old poker playing males (mostly) These guys are mostly internet players.
Variance: Technical term that comes down to meaning luck (more or less)
There are many graphs online that track your poker hands and how you are doing most moderate to good players use these. The way these graphs work is when you play a hand it graphs your results as to what should have happened and what did. (as in I should have won that hand 80% of the time but lost) My result would be negitive but my expected result would be positive. It is thought that this should balence out in the end. But in the short term your hands are very much subject to luck. This is the variance in your data.
I hope that makes sense. Anyways I wanted to create a logo that refrences the imagry created by this poker technoligy creating a modern feel in contrast to the classic playing card imagry. Something that my brand and my target audience will be about.

Excellent brief, terrible logo. You're going backwards with this one.
if you can take a logo, replace the tagline from one in another industry, you've failed. This could easily be a logo for Variance Technologies, Variance Telecommunications, Variance Dental Technologies. The point I'm trying to make is this is very generic and boring.
What kind of research did you do, cause just by googling poker I found TONS of better logos and inspirations for a more appropriate logo.
Start over, or at least go back.
Leaky Penny
Check out what I've been up to lately!

I'm going to print it out and eat it.

im torn. at first glance, i like this better than what you had. but then i look closer and change my mind. i agree with leaky and say that it is wholly forgettable both as a design and as a name.
i think your biggest problem is the name choice. could mean too many things and poker or a poker vibe doesnt even come to mind when i hear the word.
i have this one designer friend who gets really mad when the marketing staff on a project try to do the design work. and in this case, id say the designer is having some difficulty with the marketing end...
do some more research.
Sorry but I see a cheap glasses brand.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Ya starting this thing is becoming a bit over welming but I welcome the challenge. I chose the name because although it doesn't say poker to you it is quite different from the other names of competitors.
Names of some competitors:
Poker Brat Clothing
Bad Boys of Poker
Poker Shark (there is a million shark names)
Showdown
Room Rekker
In this crowd Variance just jumps out as I hope to move away from the typical terribly designed clothing. Out of the shirt companys above only Showdown and Poker Brat to any extent is producing anything worth wearing and most of the stuff is dummed way down. I wanted to focus on the average to great players to them Variance is as common of a word as full house. Also it seems like in poker today the avearge player is way better then they used to be meaning a large ammount of poker consumers who don't want to wear shirts that just have stupid poker slogans on them.
However I will go back and hit this logo with a new approch. I am excited about the oppertunity to try my hand at somthing like this. Thank you for your help
Agree with the others. Still not seeing "poker" in here. You have a RICH treasury of ideas to work with - most of it carved in stone... Poker colors are red, black, white and green. You have the suit icons, the numbers, the face cards, the chips, the classic backside patterns on the cards (Hoyle)... There are PLENTY of familiar patterns and shapes available. I don't see anything in your logos that evokes that stuff. Plus you need the FUN factor - poker is a GAME. These are going to be casual clothes I would assume - stuff you could actually wear to a table. These logos are all too stiff and formal as well - bring some energy to the art.
Not trying to browbeat - just trying to give you something to work with. :-)
