Vector Magic no longer a free service.
KellyR (525 pencils) | Tue, 2008-02-26 20:46I caught this disheartening news on Bitt Box.
What a disappointment. I'd only just recently learned about the site - like maybe three or four weeks ago - and now it's no longer free.
Well, it was fun while it lasted.
I agree with one of the visitor comments, though - they'd probably make a LOT more money selling advertising around the web app than turning it into a desktop app and charging for it there.
In any case, I was playing around with CS2's LIve Trace function, and it seems to do a halfway decent job itself. Not so sure why I got so attached to Vector Magic other than because of all the "Ooohing" and "Aaaahing" it got.

This is the stupidest move ever. In sales the old adage goes, "You can't raise your prices". First it's free and now they're charging for it?! Gimme a break Stanford U. You are one of the wealthiest schools in the nation and you want to make a buck off some cool online software? Ever heard of google ads?!
Anyway, I'm bummed.

iirc, it's not owned by them any more. not sure if they sold the technology or it was broken off as a separate entity or what, but i don't think stanford is the one charging $$.
Was a Stanford project. Now has moved to its own site. Blog here explaining all:

not a stanford project any more. it's not stanford charging, it's the separate entity that's charging.
starting to think you just like being argumentative with me. :P
Nuh uh! :)
I was just clarifying what I said, and learning along the way. I'll try to drop the imperious attitude I've had of late. Haven't had much sleep in a year and a half, have a new sweet daughter at home who hates sleeping.

I found out about it the other day.. almost cried...
I only got to use it ONCE for a very crucial layout I was working on. . . (I BEGGED the people to send me an illustrator file vector file NOT a jpg. . .) So I used VM and it worked like a charm!
Bummer. . .

I'm sure the thought is to sell some copies, raise awareness, gain popularity... and then pray Adobe or Corel offer them a truck-load of money.
Unfortunately for them, I just don't think it's gonna happen.
Too bad, it was a very slick resource.
