Virus protection?
Ivan | Mon, 2005-01-31 17:17Just a simple question. Is any of you using any virus protection software?
I just look at all these comments and I'm surprised. Most people I know don't use anything.

I haven't used Virus protection software since.... well, never. There have been only a very small handful of viruses for the Mac, and few of them actually got out to the masses. And all of the ones that did get out, were easily found and deleted.
I find disk utility and virus software to be a nuisance, and generally unstable to use.

I just let my .Mac account expire. The only reason I had it was to run Virex, then I started hearing the same thing from other folks who have Macs, including a fellow who used to work for Apple. Right now, I have no virus protection and I am not sure how I feel about it. What about inadvertently passing along a virus-infected file to a Windows user? I use the Mac at home, but my husband has to have a Windows based system at his business due to certain software requirements. (he hates Windows BTW.) :?
My brother is about to make the switch from a home PC to Mac, but he still has to have a PC at work as well-- I wouldn't want to steer him wrong either.
suzy :)

Any Windows user not running constantly updated virus protection is begging for trouble. Why should that be of concern to Mac users? I'm not trying to be rude - simply realistic.

Yeah, you got a point, but I'm related to them! :D Do you have virus protection?
Using Virex isn't going to stop you from passing on email virus' anyway. Unless I'm mistaken, Virex only scans attachments AFTER you download & open them from the email, not simply by having them in your inbox.

Not since OS 8.x. Virus protection software on Macs tends to be intrusive to the point of problematic. I recommend all my clients disable it.

My primary machine is an XP box, and as far as OS goes, I'd prefer a G5 and plan on switching completely soon. With this XP box I have had to wipe my windows drive and re-install twice in one year. Even though I have mostly everything backed up on my Linux box it still takes me 2 full days to recover and be operational with all my programs re-installed and my filing system back to normal. My ibook has yet to have any problems at all and has no anti-virus software running on it.
Someone please send me a check for 3k so I can make the complete switch to OSX. I'd accept smaller amounts, but would like the very best Apple can offer me.

Even a prudent Windows user can't get away with much. I run *takes a deep breath of air* Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, BulletProofSoft Spyware Remover, Windows Firewall (a joke), and last but not least, Firefox. Firefox keeps out most of the annoying stuff like spyware and generally unwanted popups. Everything else manages to stumble on to threats well enough, though maintainance is a bit tedious. They all update and scan at 2 in the morning, so I mostly don't have to see them. I do agree that Macs are much more secure as a result of the UNIX core and because people don't hate Apple like they hate Microsoft. Pity.

I use AVG (free) from www.grisoft.com for my virus software on my windows boxes (4 plus a laptop). I downloaded their product when I ended up with a virus targeted at norton. I love AVG and won't use anything else!
Mac, I don't use anything but common sense!
I have used Windows machines for years without virus protection andknock on woodI've never had a virus. In fact, the only problems I have had with Windows I take full responsibility for. The problems were caused by lack of patience for procedure when installing or uninstalling new software.
Not only should Windows users be browsing with Firefox (or anything other than IE) they should also be using something other than Outlook, Outlook Express or Entourage for email, something like Thunderbird.
Ummm....Entourage does email, right?
