VLC on Intel macbook pro 2008

I travel All the time for work,as such want to be able to watch dvd anywhere.
I have read forums on,and tried the VLC player.
Turned of the DVD player and set MBP to open VLC.
Of about five DVD's tried, one works.
Some open the menu, but quit upon trying to play, others nothing.
Yet always the VLC shows the movie title.. for a split second anyway.
Have heard this method may not work on new intel machines..
Help please.

You should manually open the disks with VLC. Automatic may not work every time.

Thanks,
By that you mean go into hit FILE then OPEN DISK?
If so this is what i have been doing.
Actually i have now only found one out of eight that plays.
I have even tried Mac the ripper.. but i'd prefer to just play dvd's.
Not that they play when ripped anyhow.
Excuse the jargon.. i am pretty bad pathetic with this mac book.
So any help appreciated.. use small words!!
