Web Admin
ttaylor (78 pencils) | Thu, 2005-09-08 02:53Alright, so I know HTML very well, but that's as far as my programming can go. If I look at some other programming I can understand what it is supposed to be doing, but I can't program myself.
I am trying to build (or find) some type of an Admin tool for myself to use. When I used to work for my old company, I was type in the address followed by /admin. And I would enter my username & password and I would be logged in.
Then id be able to add a news item, delete a new item, change the content of the home page.. You know, all the usual stuff. I am really looking to get my hands on something like that for personal use.
I want to recreate a site I made many many years ago for the company that gave me my first job. It hasn't been updated in years since i'm not around and no one there knows HTML. They're a catering company and would love an easy way to update prices on the menu or add/delete items.
So basically I'm just asking if there is any kind of software out there that will write the code for you.. I can design the rest, the graphics, the html.. everything. I just need help getting some sort of an admin tool.
Plus id like one for myself so I wouldn't have to go throught he pain staking HTML process everytime I update my site :)
Any hints? Ideas? Anything?
Thanks,
Tim

What you are looking for is a CMS. Content Management System. It's basically a site that you can set up and customize fairly easily. Look at http://www.drupal.org and http://www.mamboserver.com. If you want to look at all the CMS solutions you can check out http://www.cmsmatrix.org/
It's a steep learning curve with most CMS systems. You may want to narrow the search on cmsmatrix to the most easiest to use systems and try them out.
If you want to install them on your Mac and need help let me know. It's usually simpler to have a local installation than uploading the whole thing to your server.
I'll check them out.
I am in the middle of setting up a site for a charity and have found wordpress.org to be very good. Simpler than drupal or mambo, but probably not a powerful. (it doesn't have a built in forum for example, but you comment on articles.)
