Web Design - Questions...
ehavel (8 pencils) | Thu, 2007-09-13 06:01Where did you learn web design? Self taught or school?
Freelance or for a company? Do you still use tables or strictly CSS/Div Tags?
and...Any amazing sites you recommend seeing for inspiration?
Just Curious...

[1] Self taught dating back to 1996
[2] Mainly working freelance side projects but now I'm cranking full time on web design for a company.
[3] I haven't graduated past tables yet but use CSS for a majority of the formatting.
[4] Inspiration: http://www.coolhomepages.com
Love that coolhomepages site. Thanks for reminding me of it Creative_NRG!
I'm self taught, since 2000, now working for a company. I use ASP.net, CSS and HTML. I'm going to take my first real crack at CSS formatting rather than tables. Wish me luck! Nah, don't need luck. :)
Some great websites:

Dirt and Rust
1. Self-taught, I began learning Photoshop, CSS, and HTML at the age of 15.
I taught myself Illustrator and InDesign at the age of 17.
2. Right now I am a in-house graphic designer for an herbal supplement company, but I do freelance on the side.
3. I much prefer to design websites with CSS and Divs, rather than tables. That means strictly, I suppose.
4. Hm. . .some website I find inspiration from could be

Perfectly Lost Designs
1. both in school and self-taught, i guess thats what i get for going to an over-rated poor functioning school and not realizing it until i graduated. sigh...
2. freelance for clients back in Canada, i'm on a work permit in the states based on my architectural education. Lets just say alot will change once i can.. hahaha
3. I'm getting away from tables, but i still use them when i feel the time is right, and yes, there is a time and place for them.
4. - www.coolhomepages.com can be very inspiring
- i find 2advanced 2overated... and man was their style ever killed when people had this belief that flash was the end all of applications.
- an older article, but still nice is 50 Beautiful CSS Based Web Designs
- Ventilate.ca GREAT site..
- Spoono.com Good site at times, i find myself here everynow and again, but it's not really in my favorites.

Everyone trashes 2Advanced, but I just see them as pushing the boundaries. Their designs are not necessarily for every day use. Kind of like a Lamborghini. :)

I'll give you this much, you've brought up a VERY VERY legitimate point. their designs truly aren't necessarily for every day use, or for the every day user. I agree that on their second version they pushed ALOT of boundaries, and it was nice and fresh, i think the problem is that it got repetitive FAST. I don't mean to trash them, but i do none the less think they're overrated. Yes, they do interesting stuff, but i think they're put on an overly high pedestal, and i think part of that comes from the very problem that they're overly copied.
The problem: (in my opinion) is that people copy one style all to equally for a completely different client/need and don't realize that it just doesn't work.
And yes, with that, it creates a catch-22...

completely self taught over the past 7 years or so. learned basic html in 1998ish, but taught myself a lot more starting in about 2000.
freelancing at the moment whilst im still studying, but i enjoy it a lot and have had no trouble finding work enough to do it full time in the future, so i'm considering it as a profession.
CSS only. made the switch about 18 months ago, haven't looked back. it's a BIG transition period with a steep learning curve - it's a whole different way of thinking about building websites - but it's definitely worth knowing. Tables only for tabular data.
inspiration? not at 330am, sorry :)
