Web Site Critique
liske (111 points) | Wed, 2006-03-15 19:24Any ideas on the user interface on this site? I liked it when I first designed it, but now for some reason I am getting bored of it. Any ideas?

It's clever without being obnoxious. I like it.
There is a subtleness to it. Clean color palette as well.
I can see if you were to look at this too much the sliding could get old.
But I still think it works. If you feel you need a change... sometimes just a good old fashioned simple jump works fine.
It really needs some content when you first load it! An introduction of sorts, telling you who they are and what they do. If I didn't know from your previous critique posting what C&M does, it would take me a long time looking through their site to figure that out. That's bad.
Also, it could be my slow PowerBook, but the Flash runs really slow and choppy and makes the whole thing extremely tiring to navigate. Could you accomplish the same thing with XHTMl/CSS? I really don't think Flash is needed in this case.
As you know it is very incomplete at this point. So there is going to be content when it loads at first. Good to know on the powerbook feedback.
I am just trying to improve the layout going forward.
I like it, but I would speed up the transitions a bit.
Also, you could add a very quick "fade out" when clicking on a new topic. I don;t like how it blanks the screen instantly. A smooth (and brief) fade would be great.
Good job.
Great concept. Simple and elegant.
The transitions (as wurx said) are like watching paint dry though.
Good work.

Yeah I have noticed that the speed of loading and/or fading is rather slow here as well. Tested in Safari 2 and Firefox 1.5 on OS X10.4 and IE6WIN and Firefox 1.5 Win. It seems to run slightly faster on MS WIN machines, but this could be only my imagination (a nightmare perhaps?). Adblock for FF/WIN prevents the site from loading, thought you might want to know, and leaves the visitor with just the grey background. No indication. You may want to add text advising of such ad-blocking behaviour.
Thanks for the speed feedback. I may have solved it. As far as ad-blocking, hey if you don't want to see flash content then so be it.
I like the fade idea, although this site needs to finish soon so I may not get to tweaking too much. Here is a site I used a fade on....

Any other comment on layouts? Especially as they apply to the UI and the "craft" area?
Thanks All!
I really get bored, part of it is that the site seems plain and less effective without the logo on the top. I really don't know what I am looking at without the logo up there, it's just boring information to me.

Your Bernardtrainor.com site has a spelling mistake in the page title!
And it's not that I don't want to see flash content, but that the ad blocker that is set to block ads, but NOT flash content, seems to block your site anyway. I thought I give you the info - nothing else - for you to absord do something or nothing about.
Good day,
