webdesign question - clients and updates
Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 2006-05-19 15:21hey guys i have a little question or it's more curisosity, you decide.
let's say i desgned an site(handly coded in xhtml and css, no blogging system or something similar..) for an dj, he payed me and so on, but then some time after he wants to put some new photos, update some text and stuff...
what should i do? charge him additional money for that?
do you charge, how and how much?(if it's not a secret)

yeah, of course you charge. you don't work for free do you?
unless of course when you made the site you told him something like "included in the price is 5 hrs of updates" or something along those lines.
as for how much... that all depends on what's involved.

For me, i find it better to go with a fixed rate per hour with updates. Just make sure the client and you agree on how many hours are needed. It will then give your client a better idea of how much things will cost next time round, and if your price is right first time round (for both of you) they'll use you again and again and everything tends to slot into place. I find updates are a good bread and butter money, and with the client returning to you, its a great opportunity to prompt them for new design work if you have a idea.
One thing though.... if you're worried about asking your client for money to do updates, be honest and upfront with them from the outset, but as a gesture of appreciation for giving me a project I tend to discount the first couple of updates. i've found it helps establish a better relationship - just make sure they know how much it will usually be, no surprises etc etc...

since i'm 16, and i don't do designning/codding for livin(but i'm planing to follow a career in graphic design), i've done somethings for free, for friends... but for this one i'm thinkin of chargin a cuple of bucks...
so i think talkin about the updates before makin the site is a better strategy for me....
thank you guys for your help! :D
