website for wife/author
wakazashi (13 points) | Fri, 2005-12-30 01:59**UPDATED**
This is for my wife's professional writing website. Just the first page so far, as I prefer to works the bugs out just once. She wanted a deconstructed feel, and was specific about having a pic of Yorkshire (where she's originally from). She also prefers shades of blue.
Any help here would be great! It's easier working for clients than it is for family. The second I think of family/self promotion, all my ideas go out the window.
I'm still unsure about the black stripe, it feels a bit strong, I also might level off the bottom part of it as I feel it detracts from the button bar. I also need to figure out a way to end it at the bottom of the page.
Here's the site in it's full version.
Thanks,

Ok- first off I really like the photo of Yorkshire at the top - I also like your wife's name in the hand written font(can you make that a little more like a signature - maybe at a slight angle?
About the rest - I know she likes blue but it just doesn't seem to work - the feel of Yorkshire at the top says to me - weathered paper(maybe from a typewriter (ivory or weathered) and maybe the headlines or all of it can be in an old typewriter font - since she likes blue maybe make the font in a navy(denim) color. and/or you could use colors/textures inspired by the natural stone walls in the Yorkshire photo.
I think the blues that you have now are a little too unnatural. Another idea would be to change the light blue to more of a sky blue. Yet another thought - you could edit the photo and make it almost a blue and white version(like a black and white but blue) then the blues that you have will work.
Good luck.

See my attachment above. I finally got her to lock down a signature (she took a troll through the font websites and wasn't impressed). We both think that using her "author signature" gives the site a more personal touch. the yorkshire image had to be cleaned up as well, it was still beta while I was getting permission to use it.
I also evened out the styling of the left and right edge. To tie in some of the light-blue I added a gradient sky above the tree line. I wanted to avoid using non-web safe colors, which is why I stuck to these blues. I'm playing with just changing the light blue of the content area like Miss Details ^ suggested (neat name btw).
Any other thoughts? Thanks,
