well since everyone else is uploading a Bcard....
aroberts (262 pencils) | Sat, 2009-10-17 23:31So here's my business card that I was planning on sending to print. I'm still really new to design and everything and have no particular specialization right now- so I went for a simple typographic solution.
The top one is with a pattern on the back and the other is a plain b&w. I was also thinking of maybe embossing the 'ar' with a really nice cream-colored cardstock paper. Any thoughts?

or a simple high relief show you more tactful :}
yes I'm brazilian xD
No color? These days the overnight digital printers are doing full color for next to nothing. Do you need the "http://" in the URL? If it works without it - I'd drop it. That also seems kind of small (as does the phone) in relation to your name. But in the larger picture - I'd like to see you put the same amount of design energy you put into the Mucha book into this card too. Let's see some color, some depth, some panache...

On the whole, I like it.
But I would consider embossing or blind embossing the 'ar' without printing it - I read your name as rayn first of all. Also I'd look again at the kerning between the 'a' and the 'r' - it's way too tight and isn't consistent with the rest of your typography.
Yes, or perhaps lightening the opacity to make it look more 'watermarky'.
Agree with keefomatic and qwertyale. Blow the budget on blind embossing--it would add such a depth and sense of elegance to the card.
Also with Art on losing the http and increasing the size of text in your contact info. I would also do away with the grey screened background--why shoulder the extra bleed expense for an element that is detracting from the overall design?
I like the simplicity of the black and white and think adding colour would destroy this design.
nice work.

i like the top one alot, bit confused, your names ayn rite? but the AR make it difficult to tell apart thought the name was arayn. needs more spacing and change to capitals in your name. could do with some shuffling around but i like it.
Ooops. Obviously I wasn't very clear - I meant total redesign with color. Embossing would work well with this design if not for the "ar" bleed. You'll end up with a funky edge that looks like a mistake... jmho.
thanks for the comments- I'll be making small tweaks, but i actually enjoy all the elements that I have here already though it seems my simplicity came off as 'not trying hard'
Simplicity is one of the hardest things to pull off successfully. I think you've done a nice job here. I love the idea of blind embossing your initials and using the highest quality high-rag-content stock you can afford. I would also suggest you consider using a very dark warm gray instead of black for the one color. I agree that you should take off the http:// portion of your Web site's URL. That really isn't used these days. Some people are even losing the www, but I wouldn't go that far. And yes, do bump up the point size (and corresponding leading) on the contact info.
Pretty. I like.
ps: No to the design on the front of the card. Possibly yes to flooding the back with a screen of the same ink you choose for the front. Maybe. I mean, if you have money to burn. Otherwise, keep it simple.
pps: Before committing to a blind emboss of the "ar," check with your printer(s) to be sure that having an emboss along the edge like that won't cause trim problems at the end of the job.

ok, this is odd.
twice now, on two different days, i've posted a link to a portfolio piece by someone else that i thought might inspire aroberts, and both times the post has disappeared. the second time, i consciously looked to make sure it had posted, too.
Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Just to clarify (again:) - the trim is not what I was concerned about - that shouldn't be a problem. The "problem" (and maybe it's jmho) is you end up with an odd edge (looking at the card edgewise) with the emboss bleed. Especially the lower left corner where it's embossed off the left and bottom - essentially giving you a raised corner. I've seen embossed cards like this before and it always looks like a mistake to me. Again - maybe it's just me though.
yes it could be seen as a cut mistake for "not designers"
yes I'm brazilian xD
truuuuuue, thanks for the tip!
