I think what Dell is missing here is that their computers are still going to be reliant on the OS. You can make the greatest computer in the world, but if it's running Windows I don't want it. Not to mention the powerful but easy to use software that comes with it (i.e. Garageband, imovie, iphoto, etc.).

I read those comments this morning and I couldn't believe it either. Obviously, he is quite threatened by Apple, otherwise he wouldn't be making such statements.

I had this argument with a diehard Windows user (I'm still working on converting him, he's a smart guy otherwise,) and the fact is that Dell in no way can compare to Apple as far as innovation, fan loyalty, or quality. Also, for a passing fad, the iPod is doing pretty well, as far as market share goes.

Every time I go into an electronics store, I play around with the various MP3 players they have available. I have yet to figure out how to work any of them. When a manufacturer produces a player that anyone can just pick up and use, and have it work as seamlessly as the iPod does on BOTH Mac and PC, then they can start crying "fad" and whatnot.

Until then, Dell can take all their spinny wheels and 143 buttons on that player of theirs and cram 'em.

I'm working on a friend of mine too. He's a metro man kinda guy, so he always wants to have the trendiest things and whatnot, and he has lots of disposable income. So he comes to me this week asking about an iMac for his home computer. He's tried to rationalize that they use Macs at the medical centre he's working at, so why not get one at home. I know it's more deep rooted then that. Macs are so cool it hurts, and he's running a rather untrendy Dell. He's still not won over, but I think with a little work I can win him over to the dark side. He's balking at the cost, but I started to lay into him about the fact you pay premium prices for premium products. It's totally his way of thinking. Hopefully I can get him to cave.

I have a freind who is one of you. He is trying to drag me to the Mac Side, despite my reluctance. I have yet to be able to use a Mac as I use my PC with XP. I first encountered OSX just about a year ago. The dock's zoom feature was enough to fill my boxers with fecal matter. The eyecandy factor (which I beleive that I value more than most) was definitely there. The whole OS and its programs seemed more like a team than a collection of separate entities. It was poetry in motion. None of the instability of OS9, all of the glamour of XP times 1000. That said, I hated it. It was just too...umpa lumpa. Logically, I should have thrown myself at Mac like a smitten girl, but it just didn't work with me. So, for those of you trying to convert your unfortunate Windows freinds, try a different approach. Linux helped me appreciate Mac OS a little more. I ran Knoppix in tandem with Wine for about a week. The lack of "Windows has recovered from a serious error" and "*blue screen of death and damnation*" caused me to shy away from the not so freindly OS.

Today, I still run XP. As a web designer, it is just cheaper for me to do. But that doesn't mean that I can't still lean towards the plastic-clad denisons of the computing world. I run a bunch of mods on my PC that make it quite Mac-esque.

Someday, all os's will get along, and I will get a Mac.

nice setup! don't forget the beauty of using OS X is not the eyecandy part, but as you rightly said the underlying UNIX core. that's what makes it stable and virus free. seriously, is your modded PC stable? is all the restarting and virus killing worth the little price difference? i'm not saying you should rush getting a Mac now! not at all. stay with your PC until you feel like buying a new computer and then consider a Mac besides the obvious Wintel choice.

Elite_H4XX0R,

What a refreshingly honest post! It's not often we "Mac elitists" have the opportunity to engage in discussion with a forthright Windows user. If nothing else, your candid observations confirm Apple is headed in the right direction.

... good looking desktop, BTW!

Elite: I use a PC at home too, yes, I hate it but $$$ talks... What are all the software/plugins I would need to download to make it look like OSX? I am not big into modding my OS looks but this looks like worth doing.

If that's truly how you feel, then you owe it to yourself to do some research into the ROI (return on investment) differences between Macs and Windows systems. Start your search with "The Gartner Group."

Just so you all know, there are several very free mods available to achieve the look in my screenshot. Rather than list them here, let me take you all to the source.

http://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=7742&LibID=13

This is a post that I did on WinCustomize. They put up all sorts of skins for us Windows users. The programs run in tandem with each other very seamlessly, and are stable as well. All of the programs that I used are free, though the shareware versions of some offer more features.

I only still run a Windows machine because it is so hard to get anything else. Open source software can only produce so much whilst being trampled by corporate goliaths, and you really do pay a premium for Mac products. I would bet that there is a good reason for that, though. The passing of OS 9 has ushered in the new OSX which seems to break down much less. You pay more for a stereo system in a Jaguar (not to be confused with any OS codenames :) ) than you do for a system in a pinto.
