What are some of your favorite Firefox add ons?

gwells's picture

TabMixPlus
Smiley Xtra
Screen grab
QuickDrag (FF3 replacement for Super DragAndGo)
Map This
IE Tab
Greasemonkey
FireFTP
Colorzilla

I think i have a bunch more installed at home that aren't at work. FF3 messed up my synch and I need to figure out what i'm missing here.

Why Firefox and not Safari

Why Firefox and not Safari or IE or whatever? Curious, really, why you opt for one browser over another?

Some might argue that FF is

Some might argue that FF is the most standards compliant browser out there. :) I just think it's Add-Ons and Themes are so easy to manage and find that I just don't use any other browsers.

Honestly, in a nutshell

It makes browsing fun. You seem to have full control of the internet. I find Safari makes the internet look better, but Firefox has so much support and add ons that you can do things you'd never expect a mere browser to do. Firefox 3 has some cool new features too, making your browsing experience easier and safer too.

the list of add ons above is

the list of add ons above is why. it's far more adaptable. a lot of those add ons above do things that can't be done in any other browser.

and no reason to run IE when i have IETab, which makes a firefox tab render like it was IE, so if there's a site that won't run as well in anything other than IE, it works fine in FF.

feel free to ask questions

feel free to ask questions here, if you want. and go to the site and look at some of the add ons. at a minimum, i recommend adblock plus, ie tab, map this (let's you select an address, right click, and click map this and it opens a new tab with the address in google (or yahoo) maps), and tab mix plus (allows you to customize how your tabs work and look).

couple more add ons i'm using at home that are occasionally useful.

cacheit (allows you to display a cached version of the page using one of several cache servers)
download helper (downloads embedded videos and images)
track package (tracks packages by right clicking on selected tracking numbers)
who is this person? (searches names in linkedin, wikipedia, facebook, google, imdb, and more)
woot watcher (tracks current item for sale on woot.com and puts it in status bar)

Also, thought I'd post the link for the add-ons, just in case someone else wished to browse this FF section:

you don't necessarily need

you don't necessarily need to remember (or bookmark) the link. if you click on tools|addons, then select the "get add-ons" tab, there's a link right there to "browse all add-ons." there's even a search add-ons field there.

My list

You can find my list (along with links to the add-ons) in this article at The Graphic Mac. I've also added the following:

  • Foxmarks
  • FireFTP
  • Quartz PDF
  • TwitBin
  • Combine Stop-Reload Buttons

By FAR, my favorite add on is BBCode, which allows you to easily add HTML or Forum code to text entered into input boxes like these. You can quickly add link code, text formatting, etc., along with adding custom code as well.

Quartz PDF

Quartz PDF allows you to view PDFs right in the browser window just like Safari does.

it's a mac only issue. iirc, you're using PC at work, and the PC version of FF will load PDFs inside the browser.

PDF Browser Plugin ?

For mac-users:

I prefer Manfred Schuberts PDF Browser Plugin - look:

http://www.schubert-it.com/pluginpdf/

the handling is way easier and there are more features ...

it opens PDFs inside the same window/tab and a small menue bar offers a lot of easy features like saving, prinitng, downloading, turning, forward/backward, increase/decrease view and so on ...

but for the usage uninstalling quartz is necessary ...

cheers :-)

My favs

Piclens - great innovative way of viewing pictures on certain sites.

Aardvark - helps to understand the CSS coding on websites

Gspace - great for online ( FREE ) storage with gmail.

Del.icio.us tool bar - With a click or two I can bookmark a page and view it from any computer.

Foxy Tunes - Great in-browser music player.

This version of Firefox is definitely more stable and much easier on memory

resizable text area. allows you to resize a text entry box so you can see all of your text at once instead of having to scroll. now that i've rediscovered it, i *LOVE* this addon. i had added it when i saw it in a list, then never used it. but it rules!

My new fave?

PicLens—Now CoolIris—I know someone already mentioned it, but it rocks.
Coverflow for any image search you do—no more scrolling down pages in google image search, hitting next, waiting for images to load... it's amazing.
