What are the laws about image ownership?

If you were using someone else's image as a base or element in a collage, we'll say, is there a percentage of manipulation you would have to make before the resulting image has now beome your own work?

For example, could you say art you created for www.1000words.com (photo manipulation website) as your own.

I am trying to find out about design ownership laws.

If you know of a site that explains all this, do tell, and please -- just the facts, man.

You CAN'T use someone else's image as ANY element in a collage without there permission. They own the exclusive right of how their image is used. Period. End of Story. There has been lenghty discussion on this topic before.

Your best bet is to search out free, royalty free images on sites such as http://sxc.hu if you aren't interested in joining photos.com or stockphotos.com or another stock photography site.

Ditto the above. Don't use anyone's stuff at all. You cannot "manipulate" it to make it okay. Take your own shots, do you're own work. Ideas cannot be copywritten, so finding inspiration in other's work is okay. But using actual images or reproducing those images (drawing out what you see in a picture, doing it the same but in a different medium, etc).

We had to take a class on copyright before we could graduate with an Art degree...
