I'm as biased as all Apple-fans are, for I am a happy Android user. But I believe Apple fans have something to be disappointed about. The specs are better but not that mindblowing to put itself in a new league compared to the Samsung Galaxy SII (which I'm using).

Apple is focusing on SIRI, a tool that Android has had for two years now. From the keynote, it definitively works better, but it's still a beta, so by the time Apple launches it, Android might have caught up already.

Plus, the fact that they spend over twenty minutes showing this beta kinda highlights that they're feeling Android's breathing down their neck.

They didn't tell a lot of details about the phone being 4G. Is it, or is it not? The Google Nexus Prime will be. Are they going on a 'if you can't beat them, confuse them' tour?

It should have also had a newer design, cause I think part of the disappointment is that it's still the same design. Why pay 800 dollars for a phone that looks the same? I understand it'll fit all the iPhone 4 cases and accessories, but a bigger screen perhaps?

Lastly, and I think CNET was right about this; many people might be disappointed cause they waited a year and a half only to see this update. Had this presentation been in June, it might have been better.

But hey, the chip has a 5, what more do you want?

I'm interested to learn about what features are better in the Galaxy SII compared to the 4S?

Well, it was funny how the Galaxy SII wasn't included in all of the charts during the 4S presentation. But about operating system, I think it's a matter of preference, as iOS is friendlier to use, Android better to customize.

But the Galaxy SII is much thinner and lighter. Also, it has a bigger screen, with 4.3 inch compared to the 4S meager 3.5 inch.

They now both have a 8 megapixel camera, but the 4S one is probably of better quality.

Also, both have a dual-core processor. But how much Ghz is Apple's one? Samsung's is 1.2.

The 4S might have improved network speed, with a theoretical maximum of 14.4Mbit, the Galaxy is still faster at 21Mbit (theoretically). The 4S, by my knowledge, still has no FM Radio nor NFC (Near Field Communication) feature or HDMI-out. And does it have expandable memory now? The Galaxy has it all.

And did I mention it supports Flash?

Most importantly, the Galaxy SII has a much lower price. Oh, and if anyone would care, the Galaxy SII comes in white too.

Told you I'm biased ;p

Thanks mate! The iTunes Store, especially the apps are still a deal breaker for me. Don't you miss certain apps that are out for the iPhone, but not for Android? I guess this is going to be less and less or a problem in the future...

I suppose it was terrible a few years ago but it's getting better and as Android's market share is only getting bigger and bigger it might even give Android the early releases. I don't know. Though I have to say, Android has better Google Apps. The Find my Friends app that Apple just showed is basically Google Latitude.

its an S upgrade. historically, nothing game changing expected.

better camera (especially in low light) would be handy. and if siri actually works that could be useful. but really, none of that is a game changer for me. i think we're getting to a point where these devices are really doing all they need to do. at least until they become telepathic

Ivan's picture

I think if the phone would double as a credit card and a door key it would be nice. It could also be more secure for both than traditional methods.

Pass.

Android has a variant of Siri. My phone's camera is good enough. Frankly, I'm disappointed. But not overly so. It was a mediocre upgrade that, in my eyes, reminds folks that you don't necessarily have to upgrade your phone every year.

I'm about to utter the worst word an Apple enthusiast could possibly say: meh.

Just look at the website: http://www.apple.com/iphone/
New design looks "cheap" for the first time in a long period.

And so is the "new" iPhone / iOS5 ...

Maybe Im to sensitive, but I feel that history is repeating right now and apple is in some way going down sadly ...

I mean its not about design ofcourse, but even web is perfectly reflecting lack of vision / innovation in apple and I think Its because a focus on consumer aspect of their products.

For example:

1. Notifications
When first iPhone arrived it was a fresh breeze into the smartphone market. Competition had ugly and desktoplike OSes and they finnaly bring after years smart ideas with focus on usability. I really cant understand the need of rich background and generally whole layout of notification window, for me, it just screams: Dont waste time to review missed things, just close me. It reminds my someway the feeling of working on windows right few moments before deadline, when everything is in a way, and broken, and distracting and generally not working...

2. Homescreen
OK. I just stop here, cos its a waste of time...

To put long story short:
I thank Apple for "starting" new era of smartphones, but thats all, for now for me it looks like its going nowhere. Only trying to keep sales high and doing abracadabra marketing...

But the worst thing is, that same situation is happening in desktop area.
Not a single feature for prosumers: designers, engineers, etc. To put it simple: users which are using computers for any other things than just browsing web, chating useless with friends instead of meeting them personally, etc.

Maybe its beacause Steve had retired, who knows.
Anyway Is just my opinion. I hope it was understandable, because english is not my native language, but I`m trying to improve myself constantly.

I have to say I miss Steve. Forget about the phone for a second: the keynote was disappointing! Slow, repetitive, monotone and completely unexciting. Steve was the soul of product launches: he would of made this "upgrade" seem mind-blowing.

Now back to the phone: it's just not... mind-blowing. It's sweet, but I don't know if it will keep up for a whole year before the true iPhone 5 is released. Really, the iPhone 4 was HUGE. It left its competitors in shame with its design, it's Retina Display, the A4... the 4s is just not that huge of a leap, and I'm afraid Android might surpass it.

What happened to all those rumors of a thiner iPhone? The 4-inch screen? The NFC?

More importantly, why is this release so unexciting if really the phone isn't that bad? It has an amazing 1080p, 8MP, f/2.4 camera, the awesome A5, a better antenna... it changed quite a bit! The only answer I can find is the surprise factor: we already know the A5, and it was exciting back when the iPad 2 was released. We already know iOS5, and it was exciting back in June. We have been waiting for iCloud for months now. We were expecting much more, but most of whats new we already have known for a time now.

There's no huge buildup of excitement with this release. It's a dangerous move. Most of the new features are software, which have been already announced to be coming to iPhone 4 and 3GS. The timing was awkward, problems with design? The white iPhone 4? Steve's health? Building a margin between the iPad and the iPhone releases? (After all it looks like Apple will stop focusing a lot on iPod, so it needs to fill the time before holidays of upcoming years. Will we see iPhone just in October now?). What was it that delayed this iPhone?!

My thoughts: Apple better have something. Im really hoping it all happens like it did with the 3GS, and Apple release an epic iPhone following this upgrade, and I hope they do sooner than later because I think the 4S just wont be able to hold the "pressure" of upcoming rivals for long.

I really hope Steve isn't too ill or tired to stop counseling the company, and I really hope this situation isn't repeated for the iPad 3.

I know it sounds as if this phone was a disgrace: its not! I really like it and I think the camera is EPIC! But people were used to getting their minds blown by Apple! I hope this doesn't end with the no-Steve era. Did I mention the keynote was pretty horrid?

As I said, I miss Mr. Jobs.

If you think about it, this means that Apple's taking software that did run on old hardware and limiting it to new hardware. For a company that makes its money out of selling hardware, this might not be surprising. For those who had the free app, that's probably annoying

Ivan's picture

Don't worry, it will run on all iPhones before we know it. It just needs to be jailbroken. ;)

I'm not sure why people are disappointed and that there isn't a new design. Look at the iPhone 3g, then the 3gs. Those are all the same design. Then they made the 4 new. did you guys really expect a new design? They spent a lot of time making the 4. Sure it took them forever to bring out the 4s, but I'll still get it. My 3gs is near its end. I actually like the design of the 4. and i think that if they did release the "tapered design" of the rumored 5, it would look nice, but it would be awkward. I use landscape all the time to type. with a tapered design one hand would be thick, while the other hand would be holding the thin end... that might seem awkward. those are my thoughts at least.

(I agree, I would have loved a larger screen though, but thats fine... the 8MP camera and the 1080p make up for that. as well as the cool things you can do with iOS 5)

Apple/Steve are methodical.

The "S" stage is their product line process with same/better level of past 3GS upgrade.

In my opinion galaxy is way better. I can compare both previous versions of the galaxy 2 and iphone 4s. I have owned galaxy (first version) and iphone 4. galaxy is way better. It is bigger, thinner, ligher, have flash, memory cards and lots of other cool things the iphone does not have. Not to mention it can be used with ANY network!
