what do you think?

Looking for some comments on this logo. does it need something else?

I think so. Maybe a new graphic designer.

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.

the way you have treated the descenders on the a's and d's is horrible. You have taken them in the wrong direction, was that because it was easier to do?

dots above the i's are too high, & what has happened to the D?

kerning could use a major improvement.

yes it does need something else, good typography.

uninspired, staid, and quite awkward. You would have been better off just setting the type as it was and unifying the kerning.

sorry for being so harsh, but I've had a bad day dealing with incompetent / unreliable freelancers.

In typography, a descender is the portion of a letter in a Latin alphabet that extends below the baseline of a font. In other words...only the g. the a & d have no descenders. dots above the i are called tittles. don't talk typography smack. learn some. ditto on your last paragraph.

monkey1979's picture

@jamward. You know what I meant, maybe I haven't got the terminology down correctly to be a master like yourself, but I try. Sorry If I have insulted your superior intelligence.

It still looks like shit though.

Post some of your own work before you pass judgment on others, it holds no value unless you do.

I have never claimed to be a typography master, something you obviously know you are, I would love to be educated. Lets see your work.

I personally have no formal training, just 12 years in the trade, working under some quite well versed people, and have picked up what I can. But one misplaced word and you brand me as an amateur. I know what in my opinion looks good and what doesn't, and am happy to express that in my critique.

If you had bothered to read my post later on in this thread, you will see that I understood why the type had been treated in the way it has. Doesn't make it good though.

hello plancaster,

grey creative + coloured something formula is too much 'creativebits' formula xD

otherwise, you could choose more unusual name too. what was your naming process? give yourself / us more options to choose

Cheers caoimghgin nothing like a bit of constructive criticism...

Monkey i appreciate your comments, I have updated the logo to show my first draft, which will explain the descenders. (Which I like) I agree that the kerning was appalling and still needs work.
The logo is for my own company and I seem to have a mental block with it. This was my fifth or sixth concept, none which I've been happy with.

monkey1979's picture

Now you've added the symbol I can see where you were going with the descenders on the A's and D's, it still looks awkward though.

The symbol CA has promise, but I think you'll have trouble refining it, the descender on the A will always knock your circles off centre, creating a lack of balance.

Also, placing it where you have, aligned with the G straight edge makes it look like a print job that has been guillotined incorrectly.

TIV still need work on the kerning, too loose, ISING is a bit too tight.

wgzn's picture

about the only thing promising here is the mark. and it could be interesting with more refining. but the "a' in the mark does NOT have to be the same "a" from the type.

id try a whole other typeface

I couldn't agree more with this comment. Not much creativity comes from using the initials in your company name for your logo.

Also consider that a wide logo scales down really badly - get it closer to "square" in proportions/dimensions and it will scale better.

Leaky Penny's picture

I find it ironic that your company is called Creative Advertising yet there's nothing creative about this logo at all...and don't get me started on the name.

Create a brief, come up with concepts, then present.

still if U liked ur logo than, I think there is no need of obvious 'a' inside 'c'. A half size line after 'c' can easily give it a look of 'a' as well. Aks me if u didn't get wat I said. Best of Luck.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's "ganbatte" (がんばって), actually. It's common for Anglicized Japanese words to swap out an "n" for an "m" if it's right before a consonant sound (i.e. senpai -> sempai). This strikes me as oddly lazy, seeing as we don't seem to need to do that to our own words (i.e. gunboat doesn't become gumboat). Not that I actually know any more Japanese than you do. :P

What do you want us to say? that your logo is the most original? That you were the first? the best? the only designer ever to put a letter in a letter?

Were you close to your father as a child?

feetup2's picture

I love to hug and hold hands now, truth be known and it is a "murse" or a satchel. And as for my father I was so close to him we even served in the same Para Regiment together.

But about Art; I have yet to hear Art say anything worth while or see anything out of him design wise other than, a cute alias, some half ass critiques or ever see them share themselves or their work on the alter of critique .

So just like in the pub or in public somebody says something that is irrelevant or useless I would tell them to piss off. Especially if they come across as a half-wit.

Unlike people like www.jackmancer.com who did an excellent critique on your own logo while you were developing. Those type of critiques are valuable.

And I wasn't looking for accolades about my design as it is similar to the "new ad" logo ( http://www.newad.com/ ) and I just saw something similar on a side of vehicle two days ago. It was just a simple fact that his logo was eerily similar to my logo and to show him as we both explored the same fonts. It was like "um... we have been kissing the same person"

You got yourself involved Leaky Penny so don't put on false airs, and there is no respect in your language or tone. Plus you are another one to talk.
a proper critique, helps, shows or shares. And is not something like this and as I quote from you

"I find it ironic that your company is called Creative Advertising yet there's nothing creative about this logo at all...and don't get me started on the name."

You can come across as a mean little yipping dog that is barking to hide their own insecurities.
Just to help you out about the conducting a proper critique you generally;
you identify a potential issue,
ask questions,
share
or show where you have gone as a comparison,
and
you can use leading or open ended questions help stir the thought process.

most importantly then offer a real solution. not go off on a high horse.

Remember because you got allot of pencils dose not mean your competent,
and by the way fix your site or at least get up a place holder for leakypenny.com.

if you find no value in what I said piss off as well

I think you missed Leakys last line on the quotation. "Create a brief, come up with concepts, then present."

To me that is pretty constructive where a 'creativeadvertising' company logo, with no concept, is concerned.

'False airs; one to talk; proper critique; yipping dog; hide their own insecurities; potential issue; where you have gone; open ended questions; stir the thought process; offer a real solution; go off; on a high horse; allot of pencils'.... (well maybe not allot of pencils) are all admirable cliches to use when 'venting your spleen', though do very little to engage the person at which said spleen is vented.

Here's a potential issue: "hyper sensitivity".
Here's where I've gone in relation to such an issue: "breathe deeply".
Here's an open ended question: "Why bother if it winds you up?"
And here's a solution. "Feign aloofness and never use a sobriquet".

Write a wise saying and your name will live forever – Anonymous.

Well, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings feetup2. A designer of high calibre such as yourself must find it tedious to deal with petty little "graphix" guys such as myself. I do appreciate your patience and good will and bow before your superior savoir-faire and knowledge of all things related to design. You truly are a better person than me, based on your eloquent responses to people here and your vast and professional looking portfolio. Your abrupt and direct response to my post is surprising considering that you are probably hundreds of miles away from me and you would never have to meet with me face to face. For that, I admire you.

You have no idea how grateful I am that you even took the time to click on my mediocre website. I'm sorry I didn't have anything up if I had known you were visiting I would have done my best to put my best work up for your viewing pleasure. Forgive me for being inconsiderate. Your suggestion of fixing my website has not gone unnoticed, and if you don't mind my audacity, I would like to offer you a suggestion in regards to yours. I find that your website needs to be fixed as well. Perhaps a few suggestions?

http://www.spotondesign.se/

http://www.spotongraphicdesign.com.au/

I think one of these designs could fit perfectly with your world class portfolio and the work is already done! It'd be as easy as the work you did on your logo! Please consider my opinion and feel free to use it! I must say, I like the way your slide shows sometimes show the work, and sometimes don't. It's like a surprise every time I go to your site! Brilliant design. Brilliant.

You are right about my insecurities. As a student I went to a school where the teachers were hard on me and mean. They said they tried preparing me for the real world but little did they know that since there is little competition in the design industry I could pretty much come up with sub-par to weak graphic design work and still make a killing. They didn't know that in the real world clients would gladly give you money for any random design you could muster in Word or Paint, no questions asked. Surely if you were one of my professors I would have learnt that a long time ago thus becoming a more patient and open minded designer. If only someone had told me early on that recycling other peoples' designs perhaps I could maybe find love within my heart. Perhaps if I went to the same first class university you went to I would be a more educated person and contribute more to society.

I can only hope that one day I can manage to get my point across with your eloquence and articulation. Perhaps one day we can in fact meet and go shopping for matching purses, hold hands and maybe be bffs. I will take your critique suggestions to heart, and will start working on them right away. I'm eternally grateful for your kind words and would like to know where I can send a cheque to repay you for your precious time?

P.S. Your site seems to be down now. I am giddy at the thought that you are probably making the changes I suggested! Golly I won't be able to sleep tonight out of anxiety!

*hugs*

nope my site it is up. I am not changing anything right now on my site. But I will let you know when I do. Unlike you who promised me last fall you would share your updated Avatar when you were done making a new one. I sad you didn't I thought we bonded last fall ;(

And leaky I am sorry you were abused at school, and hugs right back to you. I know they make things better :)

When I pass through Toronto to drop by Gallery DK this summer on my way to Kingston you and me should go to the Brunswick house (it has been years) for a pint and I will buy you a pint and then you can buy me a pint and you won't have to worry about sending the cheque as I know things are tight. And as for me putting allot of time in you have definately put allot more into this than me, so it is all even steven to me.

Not sure if I will have time to go shopping for purses by the way but speaking of leather I want to pick up some other leather goods :0 though down in Church and Wellesley and I hope you are hot and not shy ;)

I am a designer, not necessarily a good one, but a happy one

You have my website so you have my number and my email lets chat on MSN.
