Did you do some research yourself? Google will tell you what Maya is. And if it's the best... that's hard to say, everybody has their own opinions.
I think there will be more replies if you had a real question. (and maybe you can rephrase the title)

you need to ask yourself what you want to do. No program out there is " the best " ... except for ms IE, wow that browsers awesome .
Work out what parts of the program you are looking to use, then compare those to others, maya modelling is aparently one of the best off the shelf programs but i have heard the default renderer isnt up to the standard you would expect and requires a 3rd party plugin / software to make a reallly nice job.
Oh, and yes... change the wording in your title please - not everyone likes swearing ;).

Yep, no one likes swearing in this community, and that no software is really the best. You should consider your needs before evaluating Maya. But still, Maya is a superb 3D modelling tool, which can mimic complex textures and create photorealistic compositions. Thus it can be said as one of the best modelling softwares on the market. Maya is used in many motion picture productions for character animation. (Lord of the Rings and The Matrix)
However, it consumes a lot of space (around 400+ MB of hard disk if I'm not wrong.)
I don't think hard disk space is an issue if you consider the price-tag. :p

haven't really used any 3d apps so I cant compare but you can't beat free and open source. You may want to give Blender a try and save $2000:

I've been doing 3D animation for a couple of years now and I find Maya to be the best out there, but it is really a matter of opinion. There are some out there that prefer 3D Studio Max and even others that like Lightwave better. Honestly though, if you learn one you can pretty much use them all. The same basic tools exist within each program.
I find that maya has much clearer interface then 3d max. Maya unlimited has it all and 3dmax has to work a lot with plug-ins.
And Jammo, maya's render is pretty good but it's not the best and that's why standard in maya you have mental-ray. That is one of the best around. Also there is a realy good vector render.
Zbrush (realy interesting app to check out) in combination with maya is ola la!:)
But of-course it's just what you feel good with. Maya is more of a whole pack that is one thing to keep in mind.
