What's the problem with "design"

Okay, I give up... why do so many people on the board seem to have a problem using the word "design" in company names, ie:

"Acme Design"

Why doesn't this work for you folks? Just wondering...

I don't have a problem with it. But it's a bit overused perhaps. Using something like communications, consultancy, studios, etc. would be more interesting perhaps.

I agree - design seems to be the new "solutions" and, as such it is in danger of becoming a generic (thus ignored) space in the company name.

I think it's because "design" is used to describe what creatives do in interior decor, fashion, theatre, and so many other fields. It's far too generic for what we do. At least, that's why I think it isn't always the best choice.

What I find is that people will come up with a logo that doesn't really look art oriented, they'll throw in the word design and BAM! Design company logo. As a result logos are less creative, more generic less thought is put into it. Also it is overused .

i don't get it either. sometimes i think people over think things and make them more complicated than they need be (myself included).

Like said before, I think it's over-used. More likely companies with the word "design" in their name tend to be the less professional looking ones. But, like Gwells, I think it might be over thinking it. I think "designs" is worse.

designs is definitely worse (kinda like graphics designer). oddly, a fairly decent number of the higher-end design firms in DC use "design" in their name.

I don't have a problem using it:

Interesting. Thanks for the input.

I changed my name from "Graphic Arts" to "Design" upon incorporating because it would have been too long otherwise. There was no thought process beyond that - just didn't want to write out that long name every time. Originally I considered "studios" but it seemed kind of strange since it's just me here and there's no studio(s), really. Don't know anyone using "Communications" that's in the graphic design business. Down here the only people who use the term "consultant" are the people who don't have real jobs. Whenever someone asks me what I do for a living and I'm not in the mood to talk about it, I tell them I'm a consultant. The conversation ends right there.

And with that name, the question pops up:

"Design? Oh really? What kind of design?"
"Graphic design."

or:
"Design? What do you design?"
"Brochures, logos, show displays, posters."

Then either we talk more or we politely shift the subject...hinges on who you're talking to. I have gained clients by communicating this way.
