I find the good ol pen tool is your best bet, though you can use Extensis Mask Pro. I found I was spending just as much time setting parameters in MP as I would have if I had just traced with the pen tool and then using a layer mask.

For hair, better than the pen tool, get to know the relationship between channels and masks. Look at your individual channels and duplicate the one that has the most contrast between hair and background. Manipulate the contrast on that duplicated channel using levels or curves. You can then use that information to create a masks of your image.

I just did a search for: photoshop hair channels masks and came up with this link:

I haven't done this tutorial, but it seems to show what I am describing above.

@natobasso: Thanks for the tip. I know in fact that automatic tools gives u a poor result.

@archmedia: in my experience the extract tool produce a black halo and poor transition when you try to cut hair.

@elyse: Thanks for the link. I'm goin to try your method. :)

Anyway. Thanks everybody.

extract...ugh. The great thing about the method I describe is that it continues to be editable and non destructive, unlike the result of extract.

I'd love to see your result when you're done!

IMHO there's really no easy way to do masks by virtue of what a raster image is. Illustrator, by its very definition, has all objects already 'masked' because it's a vector program.
