Where to start. Build a community folio blog using Drupal
artiswork (6 pencils) | Wed, 2005-12-14 20:38So, I'm getting into web design/development. I'm new to php, so I don't understand the syntax, but I get the structure and its implementation of css/xhtml. I recently created artiswork.org using textpattern. I love textpattern, but its not suited for community sites as much as Drupal seems to be, so I was encouraged to try it out. I ended up hear through Drupal Showcase and was encouraged by Ivan to ask some of my questions here on the forum.
So, first off. I am reading the Drupal Handbook and find it pretty well documented. This is nice. So the first bit of info I need isn't the technical jargon, because I hope to learn the symantics of Drupal mostly through the handbook, but rather the conceptual bits about Drupal and how to apply it to a community spot.
So.
1. I want to create a site where one is able to have their own portfolio at www.site.com/their-name.
2. I want them to be able to easily upload images and/or write text easily. I want the end user to be free to be computer savvy or dumb, but still participate.
3. Not unlike creativebits I would like a communal area for critique and dialog.
4. I am in no hurry.
5. One of my goals is to see how textpattern and Drupal will differ on this, and to learn Drupal so that I can implement it in the future if need be on a clients site?
Hope that makes sense,
Anyone have any feedback?
Matthew

Drupal is capable of this. I don't know Textpattern.
1. You can have that using the image.module, gallery.module and autopath.module.
2. It's relatively easy as the critique section.
3. Image gallery and forum would work.
4. That's good.
5. Install a test site. Get things sorted out. On half way, you will probably realize you want to do it differently using different components and categories. You can start again on a second test site and so on... Until you learn all the tricks and possibilities. Post here and the Drupal.org forums if you have a problem. Search the Drupal forums through google. Most questions are already answered. Drupal is a great framework, but the learning curve is steep and it's not the most admin friendly to install, but later you will enjoy the help of a great community and frequent updates.
Ivan,
I've installed Drupal locally.
I've used wordpress and textpattern, so I'm not unfamilar with a CMS logic, but i'm having some trouble wrapping my head around Drupal logic?
1. their seems to be a level of transparency between the admin page and the "public side". Is this an issue of permissions and/or login status?
2. I'm pretty used to moving through php/xhtml files to set up the flow of the content on a site. Then style with .css. It seems like a great deal of the flow in Drupal is managed from the Admin Panel side of things. Do you recommend a method of integration between these two ways of site building?
3. One thing that usually helped me with textpattern and wordpress were some tutorials on how to understand the syntax/symantics of those CMS' in order to begin manipulating my own. For textpattern for instance, I visited HERE (and the articles before it). Are there any like that, that you recommend for Drupal? I've been looking :)
4. Is there a way to be notified if someone responds to a forum post here?
I don't see RSS or an email option?
Thanks again,
Matthew
1. You can set-up roles and permissions under administer/access control.
2. I think you should set-up your site as close as possible with admin and fine tune with html/css.
3. This is the best Drupal can offer: http://drupal.org/node/509
4. Sorry, no. But it's in the works.
Hi ivan,
i am a newbie at drupal though i know enough html to develop some static sites.
I haven't found a step by step drupal tutorial that guide newbies like me on how to develop drupal sites. Do we have one here? I have some books but most of them just describe the features of the module which aren't really helpful.
Pls advice
thanks
I would like to find out the simplest ways to just tap into the resources of Drupal.
