Which layout programme for 96 page over sized A5 full colour magazine

I am currently using Corel 11 (provided by employer) to produce a monthly magazine. Corel doesn't seem to like to handle large files - I learnt the hard way. created the whole thing in one doc, went home, next morning I couldn't opened it.

So now its time to upgrade to something. What would you recommend?

Adobe InDesign. Either standalone version, or buy the whole Creative Suite.

InDesign or Quark. If you use other Adobe software InDesign might feel more familiar to you.

Thanks, that's what I thought!. I had, some time ago, downloaded the trial version of Indesign - problem was it kept crashing. Don't know if that's to do with the OS - we're all on pcs (groan).

Think I might have used quark about 10 years ago on a daily newspaper (can't remember clearly) what ever it was, I didn't enjoy using it. Guess things have changed.

Well I had better get another trial version of Indesign to show the boss before he forks out.

ID kept crashing: Were you trying to link to files over a network or just on your own computer?

Only linking to files on my pc.

What kinds of files? I usually recommend only placing flattened tifs, not psds, though it's possible to do so.

I design 3 publications with InDesign using native files for everything over a network - it's all good. I guess tiffs might speed things up though.

Definitely! No rip issues; no waiting; no transparency issues or weird artifacts...

.psd and .ai files exclusively since at least CS2.

If you have a rip error you can eliminate the psds right away if you use tif. And all effects are already flattened. Smaller files. Shall I go on? :)

Some of us actually need transparency effects that can only be achieved using psds. Eg. Hair on top of type, closecut objects, etc.
