Whip Eat Good

Whip Eat Good

ive been here for quite some time lurking, watching, and trying to learn and now i gathered my balls to show you a recent project im working on. its my first critique so i need you guys to be nice and brutal at the same time.

a little explanation....basically Whip Eat Good is a dessert bar, hence the cupake. i was trying to avoid the cliche' of cakes thats why i chose to use a cupcake instead beside the fact that they specialize in cupcakes...i made it in a signature/handwritten look and feel because they also cater to customization/made-to-order cupcakes, cakes etc. to give it a personalized feel..and as per request, i tried to incorporate the company's initial to the logo itself....i placed a circle in some of the logo to give it a balanced look...to give it a feel that their desserts are equally personalized and as good as it gets...the orange color was used to appeal to the appetite and to indulge the clients to get some...a tasty color so to speak...the font of the company name is to balance the cupcake...to make it formal and fun at the same time since they have clients for weddings also which would require some extent of formality so that they wouldn't easily think twice on the seriousness of the service...

so far i played around with the colors and thats the best i came up with. anwyays, its still subject to change.
i hope the explanation helps.

i know the name connotes something green but they dont want it to seem like some fetish thing with a whip. and by the way, im still trying to think of a tag line for it, "i whip, you eat, we good" so far is what popped out of my skull.any suggestions would be nice.

so if i may say so....sharpen up those axes and hack away....gently ;)

Thanks for the excellent description. The first thing that struck me is how the logo disappears at smaller sizes and is completely unreadable in the preview above.

This will have the same problem on a street sign being viewed by people passing in a car.

The transformation of the acronym into the cupcake is clever but I'm left wondering what 'Weg' stands for as it isn't clearly the acronym. The circle is strong and balanced but I'd recommend working with the company name a bit. The typeface is extremely small in comparison and the logo simply overpowers and flattens it.

You might want to consider creating a different cupcake logo without 'Weg' in combination with 'Whip Eat Good'. I really like the style of the cherry. Another idea would be to work just with that and the 'cherry on top' in combinatin with a wordmark.

You have a really strong start and concept but I feel the design could use some additional polish. The tracking after the capital letters in the wordmark needs adjustment to match the rest.

As for the colors I like the orange and red with the white but would avoid orange and black as it associates strongly with Halloween.

Welcome to Creative Bits and nice opening design for critique. I hope to see more of your work in the future.

i knew there was something wrong with the orange-black color scheme. kept itching somwhere i just couldnt scratch it. thanks for pointing that out. :D

i actually thickened the line art of the cupcake already because i noticed that problem while i was zooming in and out while i was designing it. i guess it still isnt thick enough. ill take note of that. thanks!

i was thinking of using the cherry and make it as the point of the 'i' in 'whip' or the 'o' or 'd' in 'good'. but i though it would seem like it would focus more on the cherry rather than the dessert itself. but ill still put that into consideration.

oh and yeah, that damn type is killing me! im not much of a typographer, good thing you guys are here. i was thinking on changing the color of the W,E,G of the name to orange. ill see what i can do with that also.

many many thanks to your suggestions ! ill try to keep you posted on this.

creative_NRG said ALOT of good things. I know I personally would have forgotten about the passing cars, but in the end, he just wants the cherry anyways..

With that said, I have to agree, you did a great job incorporating the "WEG" into the cupcake, but it may leave some to wonder what "WEG" is. Maybe try to ever slightly disconnect the letters to look more like initials instead of a single flowing word.

As for the colors, i agree black and orange is strongly associated to Halloween, and maybe that's a color scheme they only use during Halloween promotions. Other then then that, the typography needs a little touching up.

You have a great initial concept going and yes, thank you for the description. I'm just curious though, did you have any other concepts that are significantly different then these??

keep us posted. nice work

i had initial sketches but i didnt implement those in digital yet, i just worked on this one because i feel more confident about this. anyways, the client is already looking into this one. ill just have to wait for their comments/violent reactions. then ill start moving forward again.

i also thought about that "weg" thing. i thought, one would really wonder what it is and i kinda took it as a good thing coz there's a chance their curiosity would draw them closer. and i thought that the cupcake is already a no-brainer, so a little "mystery WEG" wouldn't be much of a damage. and i was trying to argue with myself whether it was confusing or just leaves you curious. i came down to 'leaves me curious'

From what I can gather you appear to be at the end of the design process and 'locked in' on one design. At this point I find it helpful to generate 5-10 different variations of representing your concept to evaluate the strongest overall identity. [I even go as far as showing these concepts to kids and non-artists for reaction]

Typically in logo design "the simplier the better". You don't always have to be so literal. In this case you've got the added challenge of a client 'who thinks' they want WEG in the logo.

Beg, borrow and steal aspects of your design to produce new variations. This is a visual example of what I mean.

Also, the illustration style on the cherry seems to flow with certain script typefaces you may want to experiment with.

This is probably just an optical illusion, but I read "Greg" in the cupcake lineart.

I like the whole cupcake idea I think it would be cool if you explored different ideas around what they serve on the menu, do they serve anything whipped like with whipped cream or anything like ice cream or yogurt or something?

so far they told me that they make, cupcakes, cakes(wedding, bday, etc.) cookies and brownies. but havent showed me a menu yet. i dont think they have it already since the logo is still being made. :D

The cupcake without the circle around it reads more as a cupcake. The concept is lost in the circles, solid or not.

If the client wants people to think of something other than whips and chains and dungeon sport in connection witht he word "whip," maybe you could do something creative with a balloon whisk? Its hand could morph into a cupcake or something. Hmm. I'm going to play with that idea now.
